cleaning aluminum hubs

What is the best way to clean aluminum hubs? I have soaked mine in solvent, wire brushed and sanded, but there is still a lot of embedded dirt

Besides a good degreaser, I was told to only use a bronze (or brass?) brush. Just DON'T use a steel brush bits of the steel will embed themselves in the aluminum and make 100's of tiny rust spots. A media-blast sounds like a good plan, too. BTW: Dean, welcome aboard!

You've done well so far - all media blasters hate hate hate taking the grime off and will charge you extra to do so. Hand them a clean hub and have it vapor blasted you will be happy you did. Also, if you have other bits to blast throw them in now to gain a discount.

Welcome aboard. Pics are mandatory or you will fade into the background undiscussed and trapped in the place between Porsche and Non Porsche. Not pretty.

Oven cleaner may well clean it, but be very careful. Oven cleaner will eat aluminum if left on too long.

Super Clean is great for cleaning aluminum. Same warning about it eating up the metal surface if left on too long.

Vapor blasting is the best way by far for aluminum and magnesium because it actually cleans without removing material, it’s also great for closing up porous areas sort of like peening.

Our vapor blast machine doesn’t work great for cleaning baked on grease, tar or undercoating. I first bead blast and then vapor blast.
