Exhaust Removal--Mini Ductor Venom
Hey all,
I've been lurking here for probably a decade or more. This is, oddly my first post. After doing a lot of reading on removing heat exchangers on my 3.2, I decided I was the owner of enough rusty fasteners to justify the purchase of a Mini Ductor Venom from Induction Innovations. I searched and found a couple of posts mentioning an older model, but I thought it might be useful to share my experience with the new one. Long story short, it's worth every penny. I used it to remove my oil cooler lines first. It worked perfectly on the lines, after heating, each spun off with very little effort and no damage to the threads. No amount of soaking in penetrating oil or heating with MAPP gas had any impact previously. I did lose the threads on the fittings where the braided hose connects to the actual cooler, those might have been past the point where heat could free them--though I probably could have futzed with them a while longer before resorting to the impact. Feeling bummed out about the cooler, I decided to go after the fasteners on the heat exchangers. I was able to form a loop around each of them and heat them until they were glowing red, then remove them fairly easily with a 1/4 drive ratchet. If I manage to get the other side undone without loosing a stud, the purchase was worth it in my mind. |

Heating tool.....
Rory,
Could you post picture of the heating tool you have? Is this similar to what another member (RWest) posted earlier using an inductive heating coil for $400? How much did it cost you to purchase it? Keep us posted. Thanks. Tony Last edited by boyt911sc; 02-27-2018 at 09:18 AM.. |

You can purchase one of these induction heaters with coil for $39 off amazon, there's also one for $11.95 that got decent reviews.

The one that RWest posted is called the Bolt Buster, but from what I understand they're similar, I think the Bolt Buster is less expensive. Loving the skepticism on here, I'm not working for a company that makes induction heaters. I'm the publisher of Autoweek magazine. Here's my insta: https://www.instagram.com/rory_carroll/ with pics of my car and the Mini Ductor. |

I just did some googling incl Amazon and haven't found a low price alternative to these $400+ tools. I'm not saying this to be combative; I'm not sufficiently flush to buy one, nor do I currently have a project that requires this kind of focused heat. I did see a $33 kit of some sort, but it didn't look very viable. I also found a garagejournal.com thread that asked the same questions but didn't yield any inexpensive alternatives, either. Are they really out there? John.

Rory -- welcome to the forum and thanks for the suggestion/clarification. Given the frustration folks run into trying to remove stuck fasteners / bolts / etc. on these vintage cars, your post provides a good, helpful alternative to the traditional penetrating oil and heat solutions -- appreciated!

Update: The rest of the nuts came off without a fight. Should be able to drop the exchangers this weekend.

Rory,
You were not able to get the nuts glowing red with MAPP? I've seen this tool in action and it's the real deal. I agree with your mindset. If it saves you one broken stud, it has paid for itself.
