Refinishing these Fuchs.... brushed and powder.... GASP!
So I have these 16x7/9 Fuchs off of this barn find targa. 2 of them had very bad curbing, and 3 of them had some bad staining on the annodizing where it appears someone has cleaned them with an unfriendly product.
I own a powder coating shop, so we are going to refinish them my way. No polishing, no annodizing, etc. Plans are to strip them down to zero first. Then they will go on a lathe to do a heavily brushed finish on the lips. We will then mask the brushed lip off, and sandblast the remainder of the wheel. The blasted portions will then be powder coated black (sheen doesn't matter). Then the masking will be removed and the entire wheel will be coated with a flat clear. Should be a decent looking finish. Not factory, but a cool look. Kinda RSR I guess, but without the exposed petals. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1612288071.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1612288071.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1612288071.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1612288071.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1612288071.jpg |

as I understand it, you don't want to refinish/powdercoat/etc. the insides of the holes where the lug nuts come in contact with the wheels -- leave that area raw
|
We do this for a living, so yes of course we know that. You never coat the contact patch.
|
GOOD, you'd be surprised at how many "pros" do just that.

What’s the swing on your lathe??

Post a sample when you do one.

Of course. I will try to post pictures of every step.

Good start! How did you strip them? What was the procedure?
|
We have a giant 12 wheel Greensolv stripping operation.

Bye bye anodizing. Let’s brush these lips.

Not bad. There’s some pitting that’s too deep to get off without a deep polish. So they will have to be 5’ wheels. Brushed lips will also get a flat clear when done and will hide most of that as well.
What think ye? http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1612400534.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1612400534.jpg |
That outer rim edge looks great, very cool!
|
Thx!!
|
That's a bit more coarse of a surface finish than I was expecting.
|
Has to be this coarse for the brushing to show under a flat clear. I might knock them down a little bit more.
|
Looks great. Close to the way the Euromeister wheels show their machining marks which looks really good. I like the matte to satin look better than shiny polished.
|
Hoping to get them prepped and shot this week still, but unlikely.
