Question about Stock Front Spoiler
Greetings all,
This is half question and half a request for some education. I have a 1979 Targa which is currently in the paint shop (pictured). As part of the process I picked up a Carrera tail and put it on the car. I just like the Carrera tail better than the '79 turbo tail, so there it is. Whenever the topic of the tail comes up, it invokes a comment of something like "...you should also put a front spoiler on for the balance." I actually like the aesthetic of the spoiler so I would like to add it regardless of the potential of aerodynamic performance. The car had a tail at one point in its life, however the previous owner doesn't remember it ever having the front spoiler. Searching the internet, it looks like the few Targas that have a tail, also have a front spoiler. I did find a picture of one with the same tail and the front spoiler I am looking into (see below). Last bit of info is that the front valance has holes along the bottom which look like they could be used to mount a spoiler, but I don't see any on the sides or in the lower fender where the sides might attach. So here is the question/education request: Was the front spoiler an option which, when added, gave the gave a different valance and fender to mount it? Or, should any car be able to accept a spoiler like the one shown on the red car in the pic? Has anyone added a front spoiler to a car that didn't previously have one? If so, I would love to get some guidance. As always, thank you to all!! http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1617193337.jpg ^^My car with the new tail installed. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1617193256.jpg ^^Reference picture from the web which shows an example of of the front spoiler I would like to add to my car. The word "spoiler" is only used 9 times in that post. |
To the best of my knowledge, 911's that left the factory with a tail, also had the front chin spoiler. I have never heard of Porsche offering just one or the other as an option.
911's that did not have the optional spoiler package have a slightly different front lower valance. At the bottom of the valance there is a 90 degree lip. 911's that have the optional spoilers also have mounting holes pre-drilled into that lip. The holes in that lip are what allow the front chin spoiler to be mounted properly. If your lower valance does not have the pre-drilled holes, you will either have to drill them in the proper locations, or you could buy a lower valance with the holes already drilled. My '84 Targa came with the factory spoilers option. Il like the look. :) http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1617195530.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1617195530.jpg |
Here is my write up on my front spoiler installation experience. Mine is an 88 but I'm guessing the basics are the same.

Thank you Bruce and John. John, your write up is helpful.
My valance does have holes along the bottom, which is a good thing. What I did see that last time I looked were the holes up the side were the two ends of the spoiler would attach. The next time I visit the shop, I will double check. That said, based on John's note, if the holes are not there, then they can be drilled in. Thank you once again gents. |
in respect to US mph Limits on the freeway i see no issue running just the tail.
I run the Autobahn effortless at 200kmh+ with just the front lip and no tail. above 220 though you do notice a lighter rear. the other way round would be really bad. |
