Similar issue

I'm backdating the exhaust on my '86 with SSI exchangers and the SSI GT3 Sport 2-in-2 out SSI exhaust (10-1010-165-M124), all from our host.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1705611308.jpg

I found out after re-installing the original muffler bracket that was not going to work as there was about a 3" gap between the muffler and exhaust flanges when I test mounted the muffler. I removed the bracket to check fitment, assuming I might need to alter or make my own flatter bracket, but I still have an issue:

Even if I do backdate the bracket (thank you, RarlyL8!) to get the muffler closer, the weld seam on the muffler (when the muffler is lined up with the exhaust flanges as in photo) intersects with the pulley cover (see scratches on the cover in the photo above). The muffler has a very snazzy indent (see in the photo below) which suggests to me it's intended to cozy right up to the pulley cover, and I do hope it does this with the backdated bracket, but that seam is still in the way. Before I go about bashing the seam down, have I missed something about how this goes together?

Thanks!

My 2 in / 1 out Dansk / SSI fit, using the the original 1987 muffler bracket and a pair of the original short straps...

That seam should have been ground when they made it

I just went through this with a new set of SSIs and Dansk 2 in/1 out muffler on a 1981 3.0 row. Did some jiggering and head scratching and then found this spacer kit from Patrick - fit the gap I was trying to solve perfectly. Not sure why it’s needed, but it worked… [emoji482]

Thanks for the quick responses Frank, Ben and Vick.

Frank, the design on your muffler certainly makes sense. It looks like the pipes from your exchangers reach back a bit farther than the SSIs. Ben, I had the same thought, and Vick, thanks for that tip. I did look for some kind of extenders from our host but did not find anything, which led me here. Do you recall how thick the spacers are? They provide inner diameter but not thickness. Seems I'm in for more jiggering and head scratching myself.

Bryan from M&K can certainly confirm, but my understanding is that the M&K long tube headers have the same lateral and longitudinal exits as SSIs.

That looks like a good product. I always thought about offering something like that just creates so much flexibility

Yes both our headers and mufflers use standard early Porsche flange spacing specs. Early muffler flanges are 22-3/4" on center.
As for the spacers, we have done that more than a few times for mix and match applications. It's simply 2 of the standard muffler inlet flanges, 4 standard gaskets and 4 longer bolts with nuts. The OE early muffler is designed to fit the early engine console and early muffler bracket. The Carrera engine console and bracket are different which can sometimes cause fitment issues when adding headers. You can get away with adding spacers on a G-body but sometimes not on an F-body due to limited space behind the licence plate panel.

I pulled off my Dansk / SSI muffler (bottom in this pic), which, per the above, fit well enough. I ran into a fitment issue when I tried to install the Scart (top in this pic)

Thank you so much for posting the spacer kit!!! I just ordered it after this morning's Scart fitment frustration.

Top: Brand new Scart, awaiting install.
Bottom: Dansk / SSI that was just removed from the vehicle.

As you can see here, there's a gap between the M&K header output flanges and the Scart inputs. The muffler's welded perimeter flange is contacting the 3.2 engine console. There is no way to move the muffler further forward (towards the front of the car) as a result.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1705794127.jpg

This is the gap required between the stock 3.2 muffler hanger bracket and the engine console. Should the Patrick Motorsports flange spacer kit work, I'll have to fab up a spacer for in between bracket and console and source longer bolts.

Muffler perimeter flange contacting the engine console.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1705794127.jpg

Muffler perimeter flange seated in the 3.2 hanger bracket, however 3.2 hanger bracket is loose and "standing" off of the console here.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1705794127.jpg

While the muffler is hanging loose (spaced per the above gaps), the tip placement is really quite good. The tip will angle up once flange spacers and bracket spacer are installed and hardware tightened down.

Bonus SANFU... One of these things is not like the others (upper right washer has incorrect ID).

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1705794127.jpg

So, on the one hand, I am trying to mate M&K longtube headers to a Scart muffler, so aftermarket + aftermarket = no fit, I guess I shouldn't be surprised. That being said, the Dansk / SSI muffler lined up. Ugh.

No plug-and-play on the muffler bracket backdate. Spacers from Patrick Motorsports arriving tomorrow and I'll sort it out after that, but it looks like I'll be fabricating a Franken-bracket.

RarlyL8 01-25-2024 06:11 AM

The bracket issue follows along with the differences found in the early engine console versus the Carrera engine console. The bracket on the right will fit the Carrera console, mounting from the bottom. The bracket on the left fits the early console, mounted from the top.

Got it.

I got it fitted. I used the stock bracket, but modified it to sit back about an inch more, and to engage the seam in the muffler about an inch lower. I also ground the muffler seam on the side facing the pulley cover so it would not touch. You can see I did not take that much and I did not remove any of the TIG welding. The spacers from Patrick Motorsports were mandatory, and exactly what was needed to bridge the gap, after getting the muffler adjusted as close the pulley cover as possible without touching, and leaving enough gap so it would never touch. I would estimate there's about a 1/4" gap with the muffler straps cinched up. I did have to put a ratchet strap across the header pipes to squeeze them about 3/8" together to line up with the flanges on the muffler. Going into this I thought that was going to be my toughest challenge, lol. Bolted right up.

Original 3.2 bracket / hanger...

Patrick Motorsports exhaust flange spacers, longer M10x1.5 bolts and unthreaded aluminum spacers (for muffler bracket) are in.

Flange spacers measure 14.6mm, before gasket compression.

Hopefully, this will get the Scart muffler mounted up to my M&K long tube headers.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1706229314.jpg

L to R:Original muffler bracket / hanger bolt, 50mm length, 55mm bolt w/ 5mm spacer, 60mm bolt w/ 10mm spacer, 65mm bolt w/ 15mm spacer, 70mm bolt w/ 20mm spacer & 75mm bolt w/ 25mm spacer.

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1706229314.jpg

Given the 14.6mm uncompressed flange spacer thickness, I'm guessing this 65mm bolt with 13.9mm worth of spacer & thick washer will be the call to space the muffler bracket / hanger commensurately. We'll see.

Thanks for clarifying with photos. I did not grok the top mount (flip). Probably would have saved me re-fabricating the 3.2 bracket.
