904-054

Not the right forum but some info might be here
Surfing to kill some time and ran into a lovely 904 with S/N 54 located in the states
Only one major issue the real 054 is located in sweden with the same owner since 1974!
The owner is aware about this and doesnt feel comfortable about this,
So can anyone fill in the gaps about the new 54?

Any one that can straighten the question marks.
What did mr Dales start with?
Definitly not Klas Eliassons car.

Looking at the Histroy I´d say Allison got it from Dales who didn´t get it from Eliasson. Dales would be the one to ask.

In fact, there are two cars with the same VIN. One fake and one original 904...

The story is that Roger Dale bought the car whilst stationed in Germany in the '70's & shipped it back to NC.

Shortly afterwards he had a bad crash in the car & so it was stored in a barn where it remained for the next 15 years - enter Ken Allison.

Whilst in the process of restoring one of his 356's he heard about an old wrecked '65 Porsche with a 4-cylinder engine which the owner was keen to sell so, thinking it might be a late 356C, he made the trip to go & see it.

When he saw the badly damaged car (lots of broken fibreglass) he thought it was a kitcar & wasn't too happy about his wasted journey (especially since the car was missing its engine). Dale told him that it was a 904 & that he hadn't any success tracking down the necessary parts so had lost interest ...

Allison returned home but on doing some research came to the conclusion that it might be a worthwhile project so made contact again after a month (so as not to appear too keen) - only to find out that Dale had suffered a heart attack & died a couple of weeks earlier !

Anyway, he bought the car (badly damaged but essentially complete apart from the engine) from Dale's mother & transported it back home. This was 1990.

Restoration took part over many years as parts were sourced - including another 4-cam engine bought from Warren Eads - finally being completed sometime around 2005 ...

Assuming the new info is somewhat accurate my wild guess is that 904-054 was wadded into a ball and then repaired by jacking up the radiator cap and installing a new car under it. The rebuild may be a valid car if the repair wasn't a rebadge using another VINed car. If the factory provided a "body in white" or just all the parts then it was a valid rebuild.

If this is the case... Which is the real one? That would mean that both of them were basically built from scratch. The only differentiation would be that the one in Sweden would have original engine, trans, and other bits.

Dear all,
in two extensive articles John Draneas has shad light on 904-054's actual story.
https://www.sportscarmarket.com/columns/legal-files/there-can-be-only-one

Indeed the Allison car is a fake and was built from scratch.
The other car formerly offered by Jan B. Luehn for sale is 100% original and can be traced back all the way!

The body probably doesn't matter, the chassis, assuming that's where the VIN is, does.

The ID plate listing VIN, weight, build year, etc is riveted to the front (fiberglass) bulkhead in the fronk on the passenger side. The VIN is also stamped in the body in front of the right rear wheel.
