ODO/trip doesn't work after repair question

Question for the knowledgeable folks on here. Recently had the ODO stop working on a 1982 911. Speedo works but not the trip/ODO. Assumed the two broken plastic gears (as Ive seen before on another car). Pulled the speedo and sent to a local shop. Tech confirmed broken gears, showed them to me after replacement, and bench tested in front of me where both trip and ODO worked.

I brought the newly repaired unit home and reinstalled. Speedo works but still no trip or ODO. everything "seems" to be in place- all connections and sender.

Has anyone had this happen before or have any thoughts on what could be the problem?

thank you all in advance for your time.

Regards,
MADC

If the speedo is working, the problem has to be internal in the gears.

I had the ODO fixed at PA Speedo and plugged it in and it worked. Ask the shop.

That is the problem for the speedo shop, not you.

Double check your connections. My ground wire cluster was loose on mine and it caused the odo/trip not to advance. I had to pinch the female connector tighter to make better contact and it started working again.

As mentioned above... if the speedo works and the odo doesn't then it's either the plastic gears or the stepper motor. I've seen a couple lately with intermittent stepper motors. It seems like they develop bad spots. If the gears are new and it worked after they were replaced then my guess is the stepper motor.

Thank you all for the replies. I will check all connections and retrace my steps. If that doesn't work, back to the speedo shop.

Thank you again,

MADC
