901 Transaxle CV Output Flange Dilimma
 

I need to remove the CV style output flanges on my transaxle (901.301.101.02), but having difficulty determining how to perform the task.

Normally, I'd expect to see small circular plugs covering the bolts holding the flanges to the shaft, or just the bolt heads ... but this one has me stumped.

On each side, there's a circlip holding some sort of aluminum(?) 'plate' with what first appeared to have a small bolt protruding from it, but neither a 11mm or 12mm would fit the head - then, upon closer examination, realized that it's not a hex-head bolt at all :confused:

I removed the circlips, but was unable to grasp the protrusions on the 'plates' with enough leverage to remove them. I don't want to damage anything.

Anybody else experienced this? How do I get these 'plates' out? - Is there a special puller for these?

You grab it with an inverse pair of dykes type plier and just rock it out.The flange bolt is underneath.Not to tough to remove.These are on pre-68 trans.

Looks like someone used sealer, which makes it harder.

You weren't kidding. What a P.I.T.A. they were to get out. The transaxle was rebuilt 40 years ago and sat on a shelf in my garage ever since.

Heating with MAP gas didn't help - had to drill and pry them boogers out. There were o-rings encompassing them and possibly some sort of sealer on them too.

Long story short - they're out and my mess all cleaned up, so I can move on to the next step ... pulling the flanges to install new seals.

What a pain. I might have a couple of those caps if you need replacements.

are the threads through the flange?
 

if so would you have ebeen able to screw some bolts through the other side and put a wrench of flat plate to protect the case and slowly press them out?

Shoot me a private message Matt, and let me know what you'd want for them - obviously I won't be reusing the old ones ... LOL

In hindsight, I probably could have drilled and tapped the holes and threaded a couple of bolts in the plates to press them out. It's all water under the bridge now, but I'll keep that in mind should I ever encounter the situation again ;)
