85 911 3.2l hard starting when cold

hi. i have a 85 911 with a 3.2l that runs perfect all summer, as soon as it starts to get cold it doesnt want to run. it chugs at maybe 300 rpm until i give it some gas then it will climb but it will go back to chugging if i take the gas off. if i keep the revs up it will drive but if the vehicle is shut off it does the same thing. if the car is kept in a heated garage its fine even when you go outside in the cold. does any one have any suggestions as it is driving me crazy. ive replaced the plugs, cap, rotor and wires. so im pretty sure it is a fuel problem. any help would be great. thanks

I've heard that the majority of engine wear occurs when you are starting the car because the oil is not yet heated and flowing steadily to lubricate engine. And this is especially the case in the cold when the oil takes a longer time to heat before it can start to lubricate the engine. I realize This may not answer your question but I'm no pro so this is my guess.

hi. i dont think it is a oil problem as it doesnt go away even after the car is warm. im pretty sure it is some kind of a sensor problem with the fuel system but im not sure. thanks, for the reply.

Check or replace the cylinder head temp sensor. It is located in the back of the engine, drivers side, under the car where the gearbox mates to the engine.

Make sure your microswitch on the throttle body and your Idle Control Valve are working. Check your o2 sensor. Do you have an old single wire head temp sensor? The 2 wire is better. Is your fuel pressure good, clean fuel filter? How is your AFM?

Also check to se that the Idle Control Valve is working. My 84 Targa does the same thing, so one of these days I will get around to replacing it. Just have someone turn the key to just before start and put your hand on it to see if you can feel any vibration.
