Brake switch question

1981 SC
If I disconnect the white wire on a three prong brake switch, does it just cancel the brake light on the dash. The reason I ask is I installed a mechanical switch and as soon as I press the brake pedal the dash brake light goes on. I searched and someone said a resistor is needed but that’s above my pay grade.
Thanks in advance
Ernie

I believe there is also a level switch at the brake reservoir and the e-brake that keeps that light on...

but, it sounds like that you have wired it similar to what your rear light is doing.
