Al,

Are you going to run the car on a dyno before you do the conversion?

It would make a great and very interesting comparison?

I have the dyno sheet from after the engine was rebuilt a few thousand miles ago. I can scan it in after work.

'83 small port heads? How are you transitioning the differing intake port sizes or will the PMO manifold match the smaller heads?

Al.

I'm in the "want's ITB/EFI" campaign... But from what I understand there could be a loss of torque over a well tuned CIS? Is that accurate? (And we all know how great CIS can be if it's not perfectly functioning (facepalm))

Overall, what do you find are the main goals and then end results of these conversions?

My Motor is a an '82 3.0 930/10 rebuilt to stock internal spec with 964 cams, headers, M&K 911R muffler

I am looking forward to doing Al's PMO, Megasquirt on my 74. But, I've got 32mm ports. Will a tapered heat insulator get it done??

PMO provides the manifolds in many sizes including the small or large port 3.0....

This is a long response, but I think many will be interested......

I've never seen or heard of any losses, comparing the EFI/ITBs to a CIS intake. I'm thinking most dyno runs show significant torque increases and...pretty nice flat torque curves......
CIS systems, when functioning perfectly, do work well....but it's really not considered a high performance intake system......however you have taken the steps required, by installing headers, sport muffler, (964 cams may be an improvement) to improve performance. The next step is to get rid of the CIS intake.

There are several benefits to installing EFI with Independent Throttle Body Injection.

1. Throttle Response
The CIS system has a mechanical flap in the air intake that responds to intake/vacuum and raises/lowers to add/reduce/mix air fuel.....there is always a slight lag between what your foot/throttle is doing and the response of the engine......with Indepndent T'bodies...you are cracking open 6 butterflies as soon as you touch the go pedal.....all in right now, no waiting. Even if there was no increase in horsepower (and there is) your butt dyno will be impressed.
2. Increase in HP and TQ........your results may vary, but dyno runs are showing increases over CIS or later systems....no other changes made but installing EFI/ITBs and a good controller.

3. The modern control systems, combined with EFI allow the control of both fuel and ignition, allowing you to tailor the tune to provide the most power under all engine loads/running conditions...and I mean, if you have a laptop.....you can do it yourself.

4. CIS, due to the intake flapper, cannot be used with cams that have much overlap...the intake pulses confuse the flapper...that is why you are limited to very mild cams, like the 964 cams. While ITBs work well with these mild cams.....they also allow you to install much hotter cams too.

5. They are just totally effing cool....The CIS system is butt ugly and the EFI/ITB system is retro-cool, while providing modern engine management.

These are not perfect before/after examples, but decent comparisons for you to review.

This dyno is a stock 3.2 with SSIs/Sport muffler and 46mm PMO/ITBs and AEM Infinity ECU....no before dyno run, but comparison of EFI,headers, sport muffler combo to stock, factory specs.

The following are excerpts taken from the DZUG posts on Pelican Parts forum.
Your results may vary, but this is a great example …..only change to the engine was to replace the stock CIS with EFI/ITBs….so a very good before/after example.
“This morning it was around 60 degrees and misting rain, I think it may have been a more appropriate day to dyno a jag or aston rather then a Porsche, but we needed a baseline dyno before we change to our Al Kosmal licensed ITB/EFI kit. The engine specs are:
3.2 SS SC engine 9.5:1 pistons, 964 cams and SSI's/megaphones running stock CIS injection.
We put down a repeatable 190hp and 184tq at the wheels.”

FINALLY!!!!

Sorry it has taken so long guys, but as all of you know, when dealing with these old-timers, if it is not one old part going south, it's another. We had to sort an unrelated starter electrical issuse, while concurrently finishing up Mjolner for an Excellence photo shoot which happened last week, while also producing and shipping parts, etc, etc.

Anyhow, without further adieu.... drum rolll.....

Thats a whopping 24hp and 30(!)lb/ft gain over the stock CIS for an identical motor, SSIs and megaphones.

The car has been transformed, pulls crisply and SOUNDS amazing with the ITBs.

There are still gains to be had with tweaking the timing, and we could probably get more out of her still if we had coil packs, but not bad

Ok, enough of that... how about some eye-candy and MUSIC (doing low end tweaking, full pull to follow)

Excited to see how this turns out.

And if anyone has any doubts about Al or his products, put them to bed. I sent Al a question via email on Sunday (yesterday) after a year and he responded in less than 3 hours. On Sunday. The kit I got is very comprehensive and very well thought out. I can not imagine a better guy to buy this (or any) kit from.

Thanks Chris.........I try to get back to people within 24 hours...sometimes even sooner. i like what I do and I'm always working with Porsche enthusiasts/DIY/hot-rodders, like yourself....so I'm typically having a pretty good time...7 days a week!!!

Jason's 911 is a very nice one and seems to run nicely too....this install should work out very well. I'll be posting progress/videos as the install progresses.

regards,
al
