Weight of a gallon of gas?

Can anyone give me an accurate weight for 1 gallon of gas?(100 Octane unleaded) Also, what does a 911 tank hold in terms of gallons. TIA

Cheers, James

I believe that it's 6.7 pounds per gallon.

I always figure water at a pint a pound. The old sailors saw goes a pints a pound the world around. I don't, however, know that it is actually true.

The density of water in air at 60F is 8.33lbm/gal. Gasoline relative density at 60F is 0.751. That's 75.1% of the 8.33 lbm/gal, so your gas at 60F is 6.26 lbm/gal. If you are really looking for a specific valvue, buy a hydrometer and measure it at the temperature you will be measuring at!!!

Gasoline weights between 75% and 85% of water.

Density of water is 1 kg/liter. Therefore gasoline density is between 0.75 and 0.85 kg/liter.

1 kg/liter converts to 8,32 lb/gallon

Therefore the density of gasoline is converted to between 6.2 to 7,1 lb/gal

From what I've read additives will influence the weight as well. For instance a gallon of Ethanol weighs 6.8 pounds. Therefore, your gallon of gas will most likely weigh in differently than my gallon of gas.

Texaco posts the density of their generic gasoline in their Material Safety Data Sheets as 0.7-0.77 which means its 70% to 77% the weight of water which is 6.7 pds per gallon. Therefore, gasoline weights 4.69 to5.16 pds/gallon

Therefore, Texaco's gasoline weighs 4.69 to 5.16 pds/gallon.

Would be interested to see the difference between Winter blend and "rest of year" fuel.

Made a mistake before. Water is about 8.33 lbs/gal. so at 0.7 to 0.77 density then gasoline is 5.8 to 6.4 lbs/gallon

Tobluforu - you are correct, gas weighs anywhere from 6.2-6.8 lbs/gallon depending on the blend and other factors. Avgas which is closer to kerosene weighs in at 6.8 lbs/gallon. In the FA-18 you get very good at quick math to calculate what you've got left, or when someone in B.F. Egypt wants to know how many gallons you need for a top off. ( We think pounds.)
