How do you re-attach a speedo needle

How do you re-attach a speedometer needle. I had to replace a broken gear and managed to remove the needle in the process. I have tried to push the needle back on, but it won't stay in on its own. Do I need to glue it?

Thanks,
David

On the speedos I've done I just pushed it back on with my thumb and it grabbed really well. Sounds like something is wrong with the needle if it won't stay on. Are there any small cracks in it?

Thanks sammyg2. I took a closer look and believe that the shaft did break. Its over a 1/4 in length, but it looks like I can see part of the shaft still in the stuck in the unit.

Thanks,
David

I figured it was something like that, they usually go back on real easy. getting them off is the hard part. Every time I do it it seems like I'm going to break something, so far I've been lucky.

sammyg2 - What is the reason you have pulled your needle? Any hints on the technique recommended to do this - glass removal etc.

I have read that you can calibrate by moving the needle relative to the shaft. My speedo reads 6 MPH high at all speeds so I think that moving the needle on the shaft would be the fix for my type of calibration error.

I've done it for several reasons, on the 911 speedos it was for stripped odometer gears.
If yur speedo is actually 6 mph high at any speed, moving the needle 6 mph lower would solve the problem.
Usually the mis-calibration is progressive, or a percentage. It might be off 1 mph at 10 and 2 off at 20 mph etc.

The hardest part is peeling back the bezel metal ring thingy (technical name) without trashing it. That, and getting the needle off :0

I believe there's a technical article on this sight about speedo repair.
