Camaraderie
I was sitting at a red light this evening when an 80s Red Carerra Coupe came cruisin by. The guy gave me two toots on his horn in acknowledgement. I was able to get off a half wave before he passed.
How cool is it to own a car that other owners acknowledge when they see you? I cant think of many others.... early Vettes maybe? There are P-cars all over the roads out here. Most of the newer 993s on up, just dont seem to care....but I get looks and/or waves from almost all of the earlier 911 drivers.

Oh yes, and it's from all types: how often haven't we read that the "new" Porsche drivers do NOT acknowledge. Well, two days ago, I was WALKING down the street where I live, and a 996 comes up so I salute him (hand-wave). There's no way he could know I drive a Porsche...
Sure enough: acknowledged. Which is to say, you can never tell!

I flash lights at every Porsche I see. (not too many around)
Its hit or miss for me. But I keep it up someday they will figure it out.

My wife drives a Jeep. The "Jeep wave" is much more universal than the "Porsche flash".
CJ's and Wranglers. NOT Grand Cherokees. Do you think Cayenne drivers will flash? |

Once a guy on the side of the road was giving me a wave. I didn't know why.
Then he pointed to the his split window bus parked nearby. I thought "that's cool" and acknowledged.

In the time before the Porsche, I rode motorcycles. Same "brotherhood of acknowledgement" exists there. There is even a code of sorts that most other riders get one type of wave but if you think the bike was cool, they would get a different one.
Funny similarity though that on the bike, HD riders NEVER waved back. With the 911, folks in 996's never wave. What's up with that?

Just stirring the pot....

Personnally. I wave/ flash every Porsche I see. Some get it...Some don't.

I waved (as I passed him) to a black 944 the other day, man he got so excited, waving, tooting, flashing...guess he doesn't get the acknowledgement often enough. I love seeing old 944 in good shape on the road, especially out here.

I have never once had a wave from a Boxter...rarely from a 996...usually from older 911s....and always from a fellow 356.

Gary,
Interesting comment on the HD riders. On long XC trips into the heartland, the HD riders are the ONLY folks who notice / wave at my little old P-car.

I've noticed that too...Harley riders seem to think highly of our cars.

Yeah, I some how got caught up in a Poker Run and I would have sworn I was riding an HD instead of a Porsche. Stopped at a rest area (which just happened to be a scheduled stop for the poker run) filled with HDs and customs and I thought I'm going to be as welcome as the plague. Sure enough a bunch of them came over and started asking questions about the car, gave compliments, one of the guys even said "hey I've got an old 356 I'm restoring". The whole ride home I was escorted by a group of motorcycles.
My first car was a Jeep CJ-5. First time out in it I recieved so many waves I had to pull over. I thought they were signaling that I had something falling off my Jeep. I (and my wife) flash every Porsche I see. Some get it some just stand on the binders thinking there is a speed trap ahead. 911 and 914 are real responsive. I have even gotten a thumbs up from a guy in a convertable 996.

Yeah, when I rode a Ducati, Harley riders never waved at me. Now the occasional Harley rider will wave at me, in my 911 cage. Weird.
My 911 came to me with a Harley sticker in the rear window from the PO. There is a connection... I just can't fathom it, personally.

Yeah, That's funny, when I rode a motorcycle I was waved at by anyone NOT on a Harley. Now I'm in a Porsche and get waves from Harleys. Go figure.

I think both brands have a classic, ‘this is the real deal’ feel to them.
I know I look at Hondas that look like a Harley a little funny. But I also love Honda dirt bikes and crotch rockets.

951's rarely get a wave from 911 owners around here. New or old.
I've often thought that 60% of Porsche owners in this area aren't really into Porsches, they just like the status and attention they bring. Which is OK. Back to my point, most of the 60% don't know that 951's or 944's are Porsche's. Which is OK too. It doesn't affect the thrill of driving one when that boost comes on. |

Jaxon, I beg to differ. I always wave to every P-car and there are a LOT of 951's around here. I often get a wave back. It's not like some dot.com poser drives a 944 because it has a Porsche crest on it and he just doesn't get it. A lot of the local 951 folks are hardcore track people and they most certainly get it.
BTW, I always make a point of driving up beside cool old BMW's like 2002's or 3.0's and give them a thumbs up - before I gun it and let them smell my exhaust. A cool car is a cool car is a cool car. Hell, I'll wave just so the car knows I've acknowledged them. Who cares about the driver? Cool cars have personalities too.
