On the 85 Targa, I notice that the shifter could 'rotate' when in my hand when I was changing gears. After replacing all the bushing, the shifter could still rotate.
Dismantling the shifting mechanism revealed that the shift rod is rotating inside of the bottom piece. It turns out that the shift rod is pressed into the bottom piece. The bottom piece is made of very hard metal that cannot be drilled. Here is a link to the part: http://www.pelicanparts.com/catalog/shopcart/911M/por_911M_pedals_main.htm Has anyone fixed these, if so, how. I am thinking that rod can be pressed in and welded to the bottom piece. Thanks in advance.

I never had one come loose, but others have (as in your case). I'm not sure why the factory decided to use epoxy instead of a proper weld. Here's a pic of where I'd suggest welding it (use electric) - it's a permanent fix. This can be done (carefully) with the lever installed in the housing, but remember to remove the plastic ball socket before welding.
