I don't recall any boot in there - just the rubber accordion like boot that flared out to cover the steering box. I think outside of that, it was all air.

Hi Harold, thank you! There is a different seal that I am talking about though. It's a foam seal that goes around the plastic bellows that you mention above. I will try to post a picture of the damaged / destroyed seal that came off my car for more clarity.

Could that sealing foam have been added by the AC installer stateside? I've seen some strange stuff in the smugglers box surrounding after market AC installs. I don't have a seal there on my two midyears. Just the plastic (Toilet plunger) cover for the steering rack rubber isolator.

Oh this might be the answer, thank you. My car had aftermarket AC (since removed during my ownership), so could explain things. I guess if the seal is not really needed for a non-AC car it's OK to leave it off.

Mine had it too It had become stiff and brittle so I replaced it with foam from the fabric store after I added a replacement bellow. Worked great. Hate the idea of mice coming in there.

Bumping this as I'm searching for an original picture of this sealing foam that goes around 901-347-393-02 (the plunger plastic cover thingy on the steering rack.)

I don't think a part # exists, but anyone have an original photo or a survivor foam piece? There's quite a hole around the steering rack shaft.

I think there was a post from a few months ago on this....

Here it is!

http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/1129308-smuggler-box-brake-line-replacement.html

There's a photo in here showing some foam blocks in that hole. It's just foam adhered in place to prevent mice from taking up residence in your smuggler box.

Yep, that was my example. I too had dealer installed AC (removed). Could this foam have been added to lessen the amount of dirt/dust being drawn into the evaporator? Can’t say. There’s no indication of there ever being a oem specific vinyl type grommet seal around the opening like there is at the hvac hoses that lead from the tub to the dash.

Nice resto going on, if you’re going for concours I guess a part# would be in order. But it’s a matter for a judge. I checked the PET and there’s no indication of any seal for the steering shaft hole on the body/tub parts list. Could be a generic fitment but then again it seems other factory seals, grommets and gaskets all have part #’s.

What I can tell from this 3/4” thick foam seal (2 or 3 pieces) is that it’s quite dense and firm, maybe from being 45 yrs old. I tried to seal the hole better w/o removing the original stuff using a black rubber type pipe wrap to further seal the opening up, but never finished up due to other things and aching back. My goal was to eliminate any air draft, dirt, critters as best as possible and not look sloppy. Certainly an entry point for mice as I’ve cleaned up many droppings, notice the exposed opening from either foam shrunk with age, shifted its way out or just not fully tucked completely around.
(Mice will chew thru foam, so best to keep mice out of the garage!)

Here’s a better overall view, the foam wraps around opening but looks separated or split, so maybe 2 pieces and it doesn’t get between brake lines.

I don’t recall ever seeing any foam there but after 40-50 years, could be gone. Perhaps they used the same “foam tape” blocks that are missing on most 911s at the rear shock tower to body? 91150493000
