Rubber strips on rear bumper (83 SC)
Can anyone explain how the rubber strips on either side of the rear bumpers are held in place.?
I removed mine on the passenger's side as it was pulling away from the bumper. Actually it was being pushed away by an accumulation of what seemed to be dirt but in fact was rust. I removed the one nut inside the wheel well and the screw hidden by the small plastic plug in the rubber strip. I was then able to remove the rubber strip (with a bit of a tug) Problem is the two studs coming out of the bumpers were completely rusted and weren't attached to the rubber strip. I assumed those two studs were supposed to be somehow fixed (bonded) to the rubber strip but had completely rusted away so I thought I would have to order a new rubber strip with the studs mounted to them. Lo and behold, when checking for the rubber strip in the Pelican catalogue it is shown as the rubber piece only with no studs attached. So my question is how are those studs attached to that rubber strip if not done at the factory? To make my problem even more frustrating, when checking where those studs are attached (under the car) I find that one of the attaching nuts is in fact welded to the plate at the end of the shock. I can't imagine what would have necessitated such a repair. So my question is, can I attach the rubber to those studs protruding from the bumper? I apologize for the long post but I knew of no other way to explain the predicament I find myself in. Thx hughc EDIT I wont delete this post but upon further thought is it possible that the two studs protruding from the bumper are there solely to hold the bumper in place and that the rubber strip is held in place by the two screws mentioned earlier and maybe some other adhesive between the bumper and the rubber? Thx |

Each rubber strip is fixed to the body with the small bolt and screw, then clamped down underneath the side of the larger bumperette. The studs are there for holding on the bumper as noted.

They are held on by one embedded bolt that passes thru the bumper and secured inside by a nut and one screw that screws into the bumper and is covered by a plastic plug. The strip must be attached down by the screw AFTER you secure the bumper and four bumper bolts with nuts.
See the two circles in pic. Those four large bolts that hold the bumper are welded to the bumper shock assembly (two on each side) and are hidden by the rubber strip but in no way attached to it. See the X X in pic. ![]() edit: I agree with David above....
