Help! Bought a "new" 1973 from Bring A Trailer....documenting the journey.
 

Hey guys - Sold my 1973 911T Targa, and my 1966 912, and bought a "new" 1973 from BAT. The car is a project, so I figured I'd start a post here and hopefully you guys will help me with this car. It is listed as a 2.7L MFI, has steel flares, and is in need of an interior and the removal of 1980's audio equipment. I'm going to need help for sure on this car.

I saw that one sell. If no rust, I think you got a good project. What is meant by "running project"? Is it drivable as-is? If so, then I strongly encourage you to drive it BEFORE you make out your to-do and wish lists. And resist doing a restoration. I got on that slippery slope with my 1973T many years ago, and it became a disassembled garage dust collector for more years (decades) than I care to admit.

How does it drive?

WOW! an Alpine DAT headunit and Zapco amps, that is pretty cool!

I thought it pretty fair given some of the upgrades that have already been done. That and it’s well on the way to a nice ST look. Ditch the tail, rockers and flag mirrors. Swap in a period lightweight interior, losing the rest of the middie influences and then drive the piss out of it for a while. That was some heavyweight audio gear in the day. Could probably command some vintage coin still.

Nice car. I agree with the lightweight interior and getting the MFI sorted, if not done so already. Love the color. A lighter interior would work well. Congratulations and good luck.

That's a hilariously eclectic set of choices going on with that car, probably quite a lot of owner enjoyment over the years. Nothing there looks too wild that you need to sort it immediately. Pretty much a perfect car that you can work on and drive at the same time, enjoy!

So it arrives on Friday. The owner sent me a video of him driving in MT - going 120mph in 4th at 6k rpm. Says it drives really nice and smooth with the coil overs.

I agree. Apparently the car has a rev limit in the 8k range, maybe 9k (I have to check, he has both chips for the MSD and it doesn't go BAP BAP BAP at 9k). I like the ST look, and was also thinking about the RS look with a ducktail which would map to the 2.7L MFI. MFI is apparently well sorted, and I def agree with a lightweight interior and the rest of the middle influences out. I don't think I'm going to need a stereo in this thing...

Ok. She arrives today. I like the idea of the lightweight S/T Tribute for this car, despite it having the 2.7L (or 2.8L) MFI of the 1973 RS. Do you guys think that one or the other is going to be better for valuation/resale purposes (not that i'm selling it). The suspension mods were also making me lean RS w/ ducktail.

Forget about resale. Do what pleases YOU. I like the ducktail because it's what I expect to see on an early car.

Congrats on the purchase! Overall, you got a very good deal. I highly doubt the car is rust free. My thread can show you where you want to look as it can be well hidden. Definitely trash the interior and lose the dead weight. I have a set of GT classic seats if you want a period correct setup. Let us know how it drives. Enjoy it before diving in. That will give you a better idea of what you want to do with it..

This thing is an animal. I'm taking it to the shop to be looked over before I really push her hard but I can tell you that she is FAST. She also handles like no car I have ever driven in my life. The RSR coil over suspension means that there is zero body roll. I mean zero. I feel giddy. :-)
