Clutch travel--not getting enough
79 SC
Recently rebuilt 915 New clutch New Lightweight PP from KEP New clutch cable Clevis @ pedal setup correctly 1.00mm clearance at throwout arm confirmed Car was driving fine when we started getting some buzzing when trying to shift into R. When we reinstalled this transaxle we just barely got 25mm travel. It seems it's loosened up just enough that its not disengaging, thus the buzzing. It goes into every other gear fine. We replaced the cable and still could only get 24mm with the pedal hitting the pedal board at max travel as I explain below. The pedal board: we actually removed the stop entirely and the steel arm that makes up the pedal assembly is just stopping against the wood on the board (see the notch I made to allow more travel--green area) But now the very tip of the pedal itself contacts the board and this serves as the stop (red area). Then we removed the pedal board entirely to allow the pedal to move a bit further and then it disengaged enough to engage R without buzzing. I'm not sure what the deal is here. The travel of the pedal is only determined by two things: the pedal stop in the board (or in my case the board itself) and the stop at the base of the pedal where it pivots (which is not adjustable). |

can you post pic of you trans. arm and cable adjustment.The sound you hear is possibly overstretching the pressure plate....

The clutch roll pin can disintegrate but not fail completely, so that pushing the pedal crushes / spins the pin a bit before moving the cable. If this is the case, you have your exact problem -- can't push the pedal far enough to move the cable. Easy to check.

Checked the roll pin, looked good. Then we scoped the clutch area. Bingo. Cracked fork. Looked fine when I put it back just a couple weeks ago. Guess it was just it's time to go. |
