Lower oil cooler bracket install on SC

Hi Folks,
I’ve been looking at old threads on replacing a SC trombone with an oil cooler and fan assembly. I’m looking for an alternative to drilling holes or welding the lower cooler bracket. Is there a way of using the existing trombone mounting hole to mount some sort of bracket that the lower cooler bracket can bolted too. Has anyone fabricated one?

Thanks
Michael

People have been successful with rivnuts. There is a thread on here where a member showed in detail.

The lower bracket should be available from anyone who sell the Carrera cooler. Most weld it to the chassis, like the factory did. As a note of caution, when you test fit the lower bracket, don't just fit it with the road wheel pointed straight ahead, turn the wheel lock to lock and make sure it clears the cooler BEFORE you weld, rivet, or bolt it in place. It might be wise to find a car with the cooler installed and take some measurements and/or pictures. PCA Cars & Coffee would be a place to start.

Thanks for your replies. I’m not looking for a lower cooler bracket, I have all the necessary brackets, including the ones necessary to relocate the horns. I’m inquiring if someone has fabricated a bracket that uses the original trombone mounting hole and then bolted the lower bracket to it.
Also, if I decided on rivnuts, I’m assuming the rivnuts used were steel?

Thanks

I'm think you could probably work some way of bolting the lower bracket to the trombone hole, but not sure that is a good idea. The bracket for the Carrera cooler mounts a few inches further forward. If the bracket is only mounted at one point, the weight of the cooler may not be fully supported by the lower bracket, putting more strain on the top mounting point on the headlight bucket.

Not sure if you saw this thread? It is for the 28-tube cooler, but I think it is also relevant to the Carrera cooler install: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/porsche-911-technical-forum/1016696-us-83-sc-trombone-28-tube-cooler-mounting.html

I was thinking of making a bracket, that would bolt to the trombone mount hole, that would have 2 holes in it to mount the lower cooler bracket. Don’t know if anybody has tried that approach instead of welding or rivnuts.

Simple. To make room for the cooler flip the horns mounting strips over and to the front. Then make an L bracket and use the same lower mounting point as the horn mount.

I didn’t have the factory mount piece so just made a L shaped brace.

Thanks but I can’t tell if you used the original Trombone threaded hole or where the horns were bolted. So no drilling into the body?

He used the horn mount. The horseshoe the horns are mounted to. He attached his custom bracket to it.

Right, no additional drilling required. I used steel for the mount but aluminum would work as well.

Nice job. I like the no drilling and use of the horn mount.
I already bought all the mounting brackets from our host .. horn relocation, the small L ($97!) bracket for cooler top and the large lower one that bolts to the bottom of the cooler.
I guess I need to get under the fender to get a better feel if I can do something similar but using the OE brackets.
