TRE in north hollywood or the pitstop in the same area. Both are straighforward, honest Porsche only guys.

My brother uses Redline. Street cars are brought there before weekend for track events and after weekend to return them to street use....Ron

I have a friend who has been using Otto in Venice to work on his 88 Turbo and he seems to do a good job. However, he can be a little cranky (Otto, not my friend)

Otto's alright. Yeah, he can be cranky sometimes, but he'll tell you the truth and what's right and not just what you want to hear to sell you on something. He's also great over the phone on some advise once you get to know him.

Klaus (NARW) in Reseda is excellent (818) 881-1222 and Aurel & Don's is great, too.

Just to follow up, when I finally actually met Otto, I thought he was hysterical but my friend who lives out there doesn't really get his sense of humor. Of course, my buddy isn't really a Porsche guy in spite of the fact that he has an 88 Turbo cab and a 95 cab...go figure.

I used tony callas...worked on factory race teams...regarded as best in this area...but pricey

Aureal and Dons are in hollywood...they maintain sienfelds collection of 50+ porsches

Cool

Unfortunately I can't really recommend my former shop in Santa Monica any longer. I just plain lost confidence in them. I won't name names, but they have not been mentioned yet in this thread.

Not exactly in this area, but I have also heard glowing recommendations for the Aase folks -- Aase Motors in Fullerton/Anaheim. They do a lot of race prep for the local club racers, including early (MFI & carbed) cars. One of their wrenches, Jose, is a "hot shoe" with POC...he has a 2.4S MFI track car IIRC that was giving the bigger boys fits out at Buttonwillow recently. He built it himself, and also just set up a 914 2.0 for his girlfriend, who beat me by .02secs at that same event (ouch!) in my virtually identical 914. If they weren't so darn far from me (>40 miles), I'd use them for sure.

I use Otto's for my 914. John W. ("Otto")knows 914's inside and out and I have been 99.8% satisfied with their work. Definitely a "unique" personality though. I guess you either get along with him OK, or you really, really don't.

I am currently debating where to bring my 911E to straighten out some stuff that I just don't have the time or desire to tackle (i.e. clutch)...decisions, decisions...I am uncertain whether I want to use Ottos for the 911 (although John W. also does own a 70 911E coincidentally) or try another shop for that car. Hmmm. This thread is very timely.

Wayne,
I was thinking I read in an earlier post Pelican was planning to offer service at some point in the future. Was I hallucinating or is that still in the works. If I ever manage to move to Socal it would be nice to have a mechanic we already know.

You are awfully lucky to be in L.A. where there are more Porsches and shops than anywhere else on planet. You did not mention your specific car,(did you?),but I would actually visit a few of these places and meet proprieters and chat for a minute. A Porsche owner who does not do his or her own work is going to have an important relationship with mechanic.
I know most of the people mentioned on thread and my .02 worth is definitely go to TRE in No.Hollywood and meet Dave B.,(frequent very helpful contributer to this BB), see his shop and who takes cars there. I see some of the best 911's in town there. He is truly a self-made Porsche man who started out just racing his own 911 25 years ago I think, and extremely knowledgeable and experienced plus generous with the free advice. No, he didn't pay me to say this.
I have never actually used Otto, but has busy shop, very involved in racing and street cars and has to be one of the most entertaining people I've EVER met. Hilarious, straight-shooting in the style of Carroll Shelby or Smokey Yunick. Definitely check him out. Don't get overwhelmed with all of the choices you have in L.A.-meeting people and searching for best wrench is half the fun of Porsche-ing. Good luck.

Eurosport in Burbank. Dominic is very straightforward and honest, and we have never had any problems with his work, on the Porsche or any other car he has worked on.

Thanks for the kudos guys. FYI Pit Stop in currently closed for business. The rest of the companies listed above are all fine establishments.

Do you LA guys know "H.G. Beiker Engineering" in Burbank? I shipped my tranny to him years ago and he did a great job for me. Is he still around?
