Glove box lock challenge
Own a 84 911 cab. My glove box key mechanism is unlocked but turns further than normal but doesn’t open the door. Not sure how to gain access to tighten nut on back of lock.

Does it feel as if the nut was loose or became loose when over-turning the knob?
If for some reason it was turned to an extreme, it just may have altered the position where the locking catch is missing the lip it contacts to close, but really not much room for this to happen. The internal locking cam is suppose recedes when you turn and might be hanging up in an odd spot by just a millimeter. Can you push a little on the door to ease up any tension? Does the lock mechanism wiggle in/out or clockwise/counterclockwise (clockwise open). Try to lubricant the lock cylinder, turning the knob to work loose and hanging up as you push in the door, also try to slide the door over to the right a bit it might have some give to unlatch the locking catch. Other than that the door could be a bit askew and stuck and need to be GENTLY coerced with a nylon pry tool. Last resort if nut is that loose, you may be about to unscrew it counterclockwise by pulling outwardly, but I don’t recall if there’s any indent in the cylinder or washer retainer thT would prohibit doing this. There’s not much room or visibility to try and fish a coat hanger behind the glovebox to reach the lock catch and depress it, but it possible any likely frustrating. http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1699722660.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1699722675.jpg |
I ended up drilling two small holes in the bottom of the cardboard box (one for tool, one for viewing/flashlight) inserting a tool (long thin screwdriver) and releasing the lock.
