Mystery sheet metal screw with ‘K’ head
Hi guys, I found a sheet metal screw with an 8mm hex head rolling around my passenger side engine tin - I don’t recall having seen anything like this before and no idea where it came from. I assume it’s body related, but any idea where to start looking (or thoughts about how it might have ended up inside the compartment)? I did do a quick partial drop over the weekend, so maybe it holds up something where it would have been wedged in between the body and engine seal until engine was dropped and the loose screw rolled out?
Thanks! |

The screws with the K are in quite a few places throughout the car. The ones in the engine compartment are commonly 10mm hex. Check in the the fuse panel/cdi box area.

Good idea, Tony. I was mistaken and this is 10mm - I also just noticed I’m missing the tin screw from the right side heater hose piece - unfortunately it’s the hole directly underneath the oil line banjo bolt. Any chance this could have gone there (the grime layer on the lower threads makes me think possibly yes, but it’s unlike any of the other tin bolts).

Yesterday I removed one, also 10 mm, from the center bracket that was holding up the rear ac condenser mounted on the rear deck lid of my 80 Targa. It was one of two sheet metal bolts holding on that center bracket... I was somewhat surprised to find that the other bolt was a unmatching smaller sheet metal bolt.... so who knows the origin of the 10m bolt..

Those will back out on their own unless very tight, or blue Locktite is used. I have had a few work themselves out on my long cross country drives. Sore are a real challenge to get back in and tight.

Charles, These metal screws are used to hold the engine tins on both sides of the Fiberglas shroud near the alternator for backdated heating ducts/block-off/wire harness, etc. Look very closely at your motor and you will find one at each side of the alternator/fan housing shroud. Could it be the bolts that hold the fiberglass spoiler on the deck lid? I think they go into those clips that use a course thread bolt like that.
