Question Does my VIN # match my engine #?

I just purchased a 1980 911 SC Targa (my first Porsche). The first 6 digits of my VIN number are: 91A014. I know that 91 = 911, A = 1980, 0 = Manuf. Type; but I do not know what the 1 and 4 indicate. I also need to decode the engine number. *6400168*.

First off, Welcome!

VIN you have is from cars produced from Aug 1979 - July 1980.

From the Red Book, Prior to changing over to an international standard (17-digit) chassis serial number in 1981, Porsche adopted an interim solution in the 1980 model year that still used 10 digits.
91 = 911 model
A = year 1980
Fourth digit indicated plant of manufacture
Fifth digit also indicated the model 1=911 and 0 = Turbo
Sixth digit was for the engine version, 3 = RO@, 4 = US, 7 = Turbo
Remaining four digits were the individual build numbers in sequential order.

US 911SCs were 91AO140001 - 91AO144272 (4272 produced)
So, you have a US 911SC

Engine numbers were also sequential - Red Book shows them from 6300001 - on.

Without having a COA, is there a way to confirm a match between Vin#: 911 311 1626 & Engine#: 6134481 ? I can verify that Vin & Engine #'s are correct for the year, make & model but I'm wondering if these specific numbers mate to each other.

No. Only Porsche knows which engine was originally mounted. It's unlike other vintage cars where the chassis number corresponds with the engine number. In the end to get certainty you need to order a technical certificate (former birth certificate) from Porsche. While ordering it you have to denote the numbers you read at the car (VIN, engine no. and gearbox no.), Porsche only prints the engine and gearbox numbers in the certificate when they match with the records by Porsche. Otherwise the fields remain empty! This prevents misuse of those data to transform a non matching numbers car into a matching numbers car retrospectively to raise the value ...
