engine management

I have a programmable Electromotive ignition/fuel system on a 92 911 Turbo. Installed 20 years ago, and with a few hiccups, has performed well. It appears now that one of the coil packs has failed. I have Electromotive ignition only systems on 2 other cars, one a trak car, and have no complaints there. Will remove one of the coil packs from the track car and see if that confirms my diagnosis. If correct, I then would see if I could source another coil pack or go with another system, as Electromotive is no longer. One thing that continues to be an issue with this system is the fragility of the contact pins that connect to the ECU. To go with another system would be an enormous task in the wiring alone, but that may be the bridge I have reached. Thoughts and info would be appreciated. Bob

They are GM coil packs, should be able to buy at any auto parts store.

I have had the Eletromotive tec3 engine management system for over 20 years as well and can confirm that the coils are GM. As to your issues with your contact pins is to have the ECU away from heat (ie the engine compartment) such as under the front passenger seat or under the carpet on the firewall by the rear seat footwell (as I have), which will prevent less expansion and contraction of the delicate pins.
Plugging and unplugging the ECU is also a recipe contact issues so I have found that once I have spent an inordinate amount of time bending those little arms into position, both the ECU and the plug are FIRMLY held in position with screws and tie downs attached to the body. I cannot remember the last time I had a contact issue.
I use Richard Clewett at Clewett Engineering as my go to source for parts and outstanding support.
Hope this helps.
Johan

There are so many great ECU’s out there now. Competition is strong.

Even changing from MegaSquirt 2 to MicroSquirt which is MS2 based forced me to rewire everything all over due to different features and different pinouts.

Not the end of the world but lots of planning upfront if you do change.

OK, you got me. No hits on Google that I could relate to.
What is “MS2 based”?

I would replace the coil pack and keep having fun. Changing to EFI has its advantage but, to get up and running quick, get a pro to tune it or you will be experimenting for a while. Also need sensors, wiring, it’s a project.

UWON: Tippy’s reference to MS2 means megasquirt 2.

megasquirt 2

the predecessor to, you guessed it, the megasquirt 3

Another relative newcomer for the bargain basement option is the speeduino

Thanks for all the contributions. Just installed the doner coil pack and car is back happy again. So will try to find a complete coil pack for right now, consider another system down the road. I do think the problem is in the base as all the coils would not fail at once. Bob
