Glovebox replacement issue

Hi,

As part of a total rebuild, I'm trying to fit a new glovebox into the dash. However, I'm struggling as it appears that one of the ducts is in the way. I'm wondering if I'm just not angling things right OR if the previous owner did something that shifted the duct more towards the glovebox area (the car was raced in a past life).

Looking at this photo, does the duct seem to close to the glovebox?

Thanks!

I did the same (1977) the duct or aluminum-paper flex hose wasn’t in the way, (maybe 3/8”} tight but no issues as the small section was for the little vertical side vent which attaches and to/from the air distribution unit in the trunk and just flex’s out of the way of glove box.
Maybe model year and glove box insert compatibility might be the issue ?
Pull the box out and post pictures of the area, but any alterations to original should be obvious.

Thanks. I'm thinking the PO must have moved this for some reason as I have a 1980 SC and the glovebox I have is supposed to work for cars between 1970 and 1994. It's going to be a pig to move because it's very strong.

Unfortunately mine is a covered and carpet glued down to show where the hoses lead to compare with your picture.
If you can get inside trunk and see if that small stub is just an extension that’s clamped to the (plastic) distribution box as I don’t recall if mine has that stub extending so far out from behind the glove box compartment to interfere as you can see in my pic. There is a bit of old glue on the corner of my gc box, I don’t recall if the small hose was glued under the GC box or it’s from carpet.

But since your car was once modded for race it was a likely a different setup for cooling elsewhere, you’ll may have to check or change/alter the distribution box.

There’s some other posts here to search relating to original hvac setup, mostly from removing or adding AC not non-AC cars.

Update BlueH

Carpet wasn’t that much glued down, so I removed it to expose the area. Seems I do have a stub. My glove box compartment looks similar to yours as well. I do recall once the compartment is situated properly, the retaining band will should draw it in and square it up.
For what it worth, the inside depth of my box is about 6 1/2” in the center to the lip of the front of the frame. It looks like yours (as it sits) is lowered down because it’s not held in place with the retainer band attach.

Wow, thanks so much EC900! I feel bad that you lifted up your carpets to help out, but do know that I now have a glovebox in the car!

Admittedly, some "persuasion" tools were used to move the tube in a different direction so I have a glovebox now but a future heating/cooling problem to resolve :-D
