Perplexed: Hard Oil Line Bracket Question
 

I replaced my hard oil lines a year ago. Recently I removed the hard oil line brackets. Just now as I'm trying to remount the brackets, the factory bolt will not securely fasten into the bracket welded onto the car (sorry, I don't know the technical words).

However, if I use a different (non-factory) bolt, it will securely thread into the mount.

What happened?!

What should I do from here? Any solution that doesn't require me to remove the hard oil lines from the car is preferable.

I can see you have rubber sheets on one side of the pipes. Are the sheets on both sides.

I've seen the sheets wrapped around the pipes.

Yes, the rubber wraps all the way around the line

Is this down the side where the rocker panel is? Some of those bolts are longer and have a spacer that goes between the rocker and the bracket, if I remember right. If you get rid of the rocker panels you have to get shorter screws (6.3 tapping), I distinctly remember doing this for mine when I removed the rockers.

You have stripped the threads . . using the other bolt with a different thread pitch seems temporary at best.

Yes, this is where the rocker panel goes. Thank you. Now I'm remembering the proper order. I need to reinstall the rocker panel, THEN remount the brackets. Rookie mistake.

What if I did strip the part welded onto the car that mates with the bolt?

Run an appropriate size tap thru the welded nut . . if that doesn't help you may have to go one size up and get a larger bolt and tap

To retain the use of the original sheet metal bolt I slide a speed nut over the tower that is welded to the tub. When installed it’s not seen. A typical speed nut is found on the engine fiberglass shroud, but might need trimming.

When you and gled49 say speed nut over the welded factory tab, do you mean between the nut and tab, or on the other side of the tab? I may not understand how the speed nut works.

The body tab has nothing more than a hole in it. The sheet metal bolts into the hole. Slip a speed nut over the tab or even behind it.
