Temp Gauge (not oil temp)

I have a 1989 Silver Anniversary Special Edition car. It has an outside air temperature gauge (thermometer) in the center console that has quit working. Wondering if anyone has experience fixing this gauge?

Normally I wouldn't really care because, well, I can pretty easily figure out what the ambient temp is. But, since this is an SAE car in very good condition, I'd like for everything to work.

I used the advanced search here, but the only thing that returns are threads dealing with oil temperature gauge issues.

All actionable help appreciated.

There are some go-to places that have been servicing Porsche gauges, two come to mind:

https://www.nhspeedometer.com

Palo Alto Speedometer: Repair, Restoration, and Sales of Automobile Gauges

I bought a gauge from North Hollywood years ago and it was great, and Palo Alto has generally good reviews here.

Maybe do a search for gauge repair, and see where people are taking their gauges to? This is assuming you want to send it out rather than dissect and service on your own.

I suppose that this exterior temperature gauge is from VDO as the rest of the gauges too. You can still purchase them. Here's the product page by VDO:
https://vdo-webshop.nl/en/temperature-gauges/1218-vdo-cockpit-international-air-temperature-50c-52mm-12v-4103590703156.html

Concerning the issue - either a contact problem or the sensor is defective. Probably the sensor is available alone. Don't know.

Here's an ebay auction selling the sensor kit alone:

Figure out what's not connected or broken first, and then address that. John Bell (jbell959) on this forum can likely fix any VDO gauge. And he's good people & great to deal with.

If your existing gauge is calibrated in Farenheit and you need a new one, complete kit (including sender) available here: 397-154 - VDO 120F Outside Temperature Gauge Kit - Temperature Gauges - Vision Black - Automotive Gauges - VDO.

It does say that VDO are phasing them out, and to "contact for availability" soooo....

Many kudos to John Bell. I sent him my entire gauge set, had him add a volt meter. Everything came back without a problem. Just perfect…

I third this from spuggy on John Bell. Send him a broken oil temp gauge and he figured out the issue and fixed it within a day. Perfect
