All I can say is that I'd love to have that blue 993S, love to have some of AC that blows cold as ice that the radio can be heard over, and of course some more horsepower, until I can afford all that it will have to be drop the top, crank up the lousy radio/AC and hope my future 993 owner (the FO I will call him) gets the creaky winshield, wiring harness, carbon issues all worked out so when I take it over its ready to go.

Ah come on if the car hasn't been sitting in the sun the A/C in the 3.2s isn't that bad right after it's been charged. If you're doing more than 30mph and if it's not too hot outside.

I think the 993 series is the best looking EVER, I like 'em better than my 3.2 and hope to own some day.

I looked at a 96 993 Coupe and it definitely had the front windshield creak. I read that you can't get rid of it permanently. You should visit a dealer and test drive one. Also on start up there was a big puff of whitish smoke. I did some research and found it was normal. Kind of like our puff of blue smoke.

Much better power than my 3.2 but the car felt heavier even though it had power steering. Owner said clutch had just been replaced but it was heavier than in my 86 with cable. I was expecting it to be more silky.

Like someone else said they all have their pluses and minuses. The A/C in the 993 was tremendous.

clutch on any year seems to depend on age and state of adjustment.

one drawback of the 993's is that facial wrinkles begin to develop from grinning all the time. then again, a 72 or 73 MFI coupe does the same thing. Oh, wait a minute, all 911's get me grinning.....

just a couple of notes. --tire wear-- alignment specs changed for '96. if you have a '95, make sure they do an alignment to the later specs. You will still go through tires quickly. they do not wear in a weird pattern because of a design flaw, but because the way the rear suspension is designed - it gets a lot of work out of those back tires when braking and cornering. they just wear quickly because of the torque of the car, the weight of the car, and the rubber compound used in the tires of the most popular 993 tires (they are popular because of the grip they give). The windshield squeak. the windshield is fixed to the body of the car with adhesive. very rarely, this adhesive becomes loose. the cause of the noise is the lip of the seal rubbing against the body as the chassis flexes. to eliminate the noise the lip of the seal must be lubricated so it does not 'chatter' against the windshield frame. on the 996 porsche prescribed a cord impregnated with a silicon based lube placed between the edge of the glass and the windshield frame. some guys have used this on their 993s. Most use pedro's ice wax. a water resistant wax manufactured for bicycle chains/sprockets. it is what i use, with great results. lasts at least six months after the first two applications. if you want more info on how i apply the ice wax, send me a PM. max

Good thread. I feel better informed now. Since the tax for a 993 here is at least 70000 Euro (add the car to that) I'm not going to buy a 993 :( Still I love the 993 and I'm curious about its problems.

I didn't know about tire wear. So basically the tires wear quickly not because the car is out of balance, but because of the way it's built.

Windshield creaking: So it isn't a problem with all 993s, but can be seen on all types, coupes included?

I have never heard of carbon build up. Doesn't it depend on the fuel and driving style?

Wireing issue: What exactly is the problem? Erratic electrics or what?

I've heard about large oil consumption on German Porsche pages. No details though (I hoped someone here might knew about it).

It's something you shouldn't have to worry about with your European car. It's an American environmental issue that causes us to get stupid parts that cause extra problems.

As far as a solution, I work at Otto's Venice, and we have found a solution to the secondary air injection problem, that works 95% of the time, and costs around $1000.00 US. There's actually a write-up on it in the June(?) 2005 Excellence in the tech section.
