Early model Targa bar help

I have a 68 targa that I bought in pieces. Mike's Restoration videos have been great to get me in a place to do everything...except the underside of the targa bar. He's got a coupe. I haven't been able to find any good instructions in the forum here or on YT.

On top of that, I'm converting a fixed window to a SWT.

I know I've got to cover the targa bar underside piece. I did dry-fit it here, but it looks like the backside of the piece covers the connection for the soft window. So this piece seems to be for the fixed window and needs to be modified? (Looking at parts list, the interior lining PN 90156501747 for fixed window & PN 90156501744 for softie...anyone know what the diff is?)

I know I need a seal for the front (90156509140) and also for the backside (90156591440).

There are 2 Targa seals (left & right, 90156527540 & 90156527640) that I believe are attached to the targa top itself.

There is also roll bar lining (left & right, 90156551342) that I'm not sure is needed or where it goes. It might be part of the interior lining piece I already have?

The chrome trim that I have for the exterior below the targa bar extends around the back side. Do I use that as well? Pics I've seen of that trim piece just went below the targa bar itself.

Any pics or info from an early model targa owner would be helpful. Thanks!

I have a '69 SWT that I'm currently restoring. The upholstery piece that you're referring to has a cutout on each end to accommadate the rear window mechanism.

The targa top seals themselves should be the same as a fixed window targa.

The chrome trim on the SWT only extends the length of the targa bar itself. Only other difference that I can think of is that the rear of the targa bar has a special seal (different than the fixed window) that attaches to the lip of the bar and mates up with the top of the soft rear window.

I can send pics if necessary but it will be a few days.

You will see a lot of targa bar interior guts on this thread, mostly on newer cars (though I don't know that it changed much):

The interior targa bar piece is not an easy wrestle.

Thx guys.

RDM - I've seen that thread and there's not much for an SWT owner. They are all fixed window. Given the later model cars, I'm not exactly sure how the targa bar underside piece integrates on the front side. Sometimes I see folks install the vinyl on the car metal and wrap around the underside trim piece. On my car, the vinyl was on the trim piece only (b/c I took it off...).

Bsess - I'll take you up on what ever pics you have. The backside of the underside trim piece needs cutouts for the rear window handles. Got it. Can you get a pic or some rough dimensions of the cut outs? Any pic you have of that would be helpful. Also, there's a big cushion on the back side that seems to extend up and might get in the way of the SWT window when it closes. Does that have to be cut flat, too? Whatever pics you have of the underside trim piece would be helpful for me to modify mine. Thanks

I'm sorry for the delay in response. I broke 2 windshields trying to set them but that's for another post.

The targa bar has turned out well. First, I got a couple pics of the underside targa piece from bsess off his car. Here's an example showing where the cutouts are for the handles and how they look:

Next, I dry fit my underside piece and took some measurements with the handles installed. I wanted to make sure my cutouts were in the exact spot for the handles.

First, I trimmed the insulation on the back. I used a razor blade and my dremel for this:

I marked where I wanted the aluminum trimmed and used my dremel to cut it out:

I tested the fit and trimmed it back a little more...I didn't want the handle toughing the alum or the foam:

When I was happy with it, I covered it in new vinyl and installed it:

I installed the SWT & it turned out nice.

Ok, here's the next question:

The metal targa cover goes on next. But there's a seal between the roll bar and the SWT. PN 90156591440. The cross section looks like this:

Somehow the seal integrates with the metal targa top and the roll bar. I'm sure the tapered end slides on top of the SWT. But I'm not sure how the seal attaches.

Anyone have an idea? Is adhesive used on it?

Thanks!

Ok, thx to bsess who sent a couple pics of his 69' SWT targa, I know how this seal attaches. First, this is the orientation:

The seal attaches to both the flange at the back of the roll bar AND the back of the metal trim piece that covers the roll bar. The larger side of the seal attaches to the back side of the roll bar while the smaller side faces up:

Then when the metal cover is installed, the smaller side of the seal rolls around it.

I did not glue the seal to the roll bar flange, but will glue it to the edge of the trim...as shown in this pic from bsess:
