Monty muffler

Hi all. I have an 84 911 cab. I’ve been thinking about buying a 2 in 1 out Monty muffler for my car. Couple of things.

1. I’ve read some things here that Monty’s don’t fit all that great? Any thoughts / experiences?

2. I’m not sure I like the tail pipe so was wondering if anyone out there put a black tip on their Monty and what that looks like? If you might share a pic, that would be great.

They fit fine. I've used a lot of them. The 3" tail pipe does look nice once you get used to it. My favorite mudfler.

Had a 2 in 1 out. The inlet flanges were not perfectly flat when I put a straightedge across both. Monty said tighten it down and it will be fine. Did just that and no problems. Very well made. Took a little bit to get used to the 3" outlet but had more to do with size and not the stainless finish.

Thanks guys. Has anyone ever thought of putting a black tip on a Monty? Just curious.

hey -- fyi, the original exhaust headers for a carrera require a 1 in muffler configuration, 2 in is for a ssi setup -- if you're still running a catalytic converter (or cat bypass), you'll need a 1 in muffler.

Oh. Ok I’m clueless. Lol. Well I’m doing a top end rebuild among other things and I have everything out. I’ll look at the existing exhaust setup. I’m sure you are right of course. So, our host sells ssi ‘s. But I don’t think they are available any more. Who has ssis and do you like them. Have they made a difference?

do you need to pass emissions? You can't do so with SSIs (without a LOT of modification). Also, conventional wisdom is that SSIs are a bit undersized for the 3.2 liter engine and don't provide a significant (any) performance increase over stock headers with a euro premuffler/cat bypass.

Finally, switching to SSIs will require both modifications to oil lines and the heating system.

May simply want to go with a 1 in 1 out monty and call it a day

SSI’s and 3.2’s do not go together. Keep the exhaust manifolds stock. I would suggest going with the Monty, cat bypass if doable in your state AND a Steve Wong chip.

I had a single in / out for a Carrera, purchased directly from Monty. The flange was off by about 33mm, the pipe had to be cut and rewelded. Many are quick to point out that the exhaust on these cars warps so your fitment will be off. This may be true but i think my car is pretty spot on... ive run multiple exhaust configurations and never had any fitment problems.

This includes a Bursch test pipe, M&K pre-muffler, Fabspeed CAT and a smogable cat. Mufflers used were a Bursch, M&K, Monty and currently a Dansk sport. Every one of these combos ive used fit without any issue except for the Monty.

Once i got the Monty fitted correctly; i simply could not live with the drone and ended up selling it. Unsure if the drone is attributed to my engine setup...i ran it with a CAT but my engine is not a stock 3.2L. The guy that bought it loved the sound and it fit his car without any issues, which further convinces me the muffler alignment was off.

It did look good once installed...

30mm too long inlet and drone??? You did get a dud one!

Never heard any previous criticisms of that nature, only good things in fact. I was very happy with my Monty 1 in 1 out on my first 3.2.

Current 3.2 came with a M&K 1 in 1 out and I'm happy with it too so that may be a cheaper alternative for consideration too.

No drone with either.

I had the same fitment issues as Techno Duck. I had to have the pipe cut about a half inch at the mounting flange to get it to fit properly.

However, with the stock cat, I did not find it particularly loud. In fact, under most driving, it's barely louder than the stock muffler.

I do think the big brushed muffler looks really cool from the back.

Lol. Thank you all. I think I’m going to pull the plug and do a Monty without ssi’s as my next fun thing for my baby. I still might try to put a black tip on the SS tip though. I think that would look completely bad! I’ve had my 84 since 2003 and like a cat in front of a mouse hole have been waiting patiently to upgrade, fix etc. I’ve already regeared my 915 and added 9 inch Fuchs in the back and 7’s in the front. I’m doing a top end rebuild now. Can’t wait to upgrade the exhaust.

I have a Monty 2 in/1 out on my '86 cab. It fits just fine, sounds great and is very well made. Actually, I have 2 of them, as the other was on a car since converted to PMOs, and my two Monty's are for fuel injected cars. I learned that there is a difference in back pressure needs between carbs and FI. So i am selling my spare Monty, 2 in/1 out, for a 3.0 or 3.2 with SSIs or any pre-74 heat exchanger and fuel injection. I think they sell for $1800 or so, will take $1000.

Pretty happy with my Monty 3" 2 in/1 out on my 1970 2.8 with SSI exhaust. It does require lifting at the Laguna Seca sound station.

Sounds like "Monty" sold up and retired here in Australia and either they are being made in usa or Monty sold all his stock to the USA... We used to pay a lot less for them when they were here. A LOT less.

Better late (six years!) than never and more than a black tip, but my black ceramic coated Monty (going back in the car before Werks Monterey)...

I am interested in your 2 in / 1 out. PM sent (a few days ago).
