Driver window will not go up or down

Team
Not posted here in a while. I have an 86 911 that I have owned over 10 years. The drivers side window has given up the ghost. I was opening fine & then I had to toggle the switch to get it back up. No it won’t go back up at all.
Please help.
Also, enlighten me on how to take the door panel off
Thanks
Bash

The passenger door window on my '88 gives me problems from time to time.
While holding the switch up or down, open then slam the door shut to jar the motor. Works for me every time. Can also give the door card a bang while the switch is pressed... that also works for me.

I you haven't, check the fuses

Bill Douglas 10-19-2024 01:34 PM

After the fuse, next is the switch.

Which fuse is it?

Look in your owner's manual or the label under the cover of the fuse panel.

I'm willing to bet it's the switch. I've gone through 3 or 4 of them. I now always carry a spare in the glove box.

I haven't had much luck with them either.

One thing I did do was put new spade connectors on some of the wires. They weren't biting into the connector on the switch well enough to get good current.

Checked the fuse it’s all good. Can someone give me a quick tutorial on removing the Inside door panel so I can look at the switch thanks

From recent experience, I found one of the wires (red wire) was a bit worn and exposed behind the switch and that was my problem.

I have also replaced the motors, fixed the "regulator spring issue" on both doors and installed two new switches...windows work like new.

I have heard the felt can also cause issues...

Check out this thread:

If it's a switch just pop the switch out from non functional window and swap with another switch already in the car...I used an old butter knife to pop out the switch from the metal frame in the door card...86' Coupe here.

No need to remove door panel, the switches can be carefully pulled out and inspected and replaced. Make sure and note how the wires are attached. Plenty of threads on this subject. The switches are very unreliable from my experience. I did have a broken wire in the passenger side wiring but that is far less likely than a buggy switch.

My money is on the switch. Don’t need to remove the panel. As others have said there are lots of threads on this. Switch the passenger side to the drivers side to test.

Replaced both switches for passenger side
Still dead
Are both switches on the same circuit? Pass window switch on the driver door & the pass switch on pass side?

Have you tried the manual winder trick? It is documented in the owner's manual, if you have one. You pop off the cover or the tweeter if your car had one, put a 4mm hex key into the opening until you feel it slot in (to the motor), and turn to the left. The car came with a tool for this, if you still have the original tool kit. I had this problem last year, and using the tool, popped the window free and then it worked fine again with the switch... Until it stopped again. I haven't gone back to it, but I guess I need a new motor or regulator. It wasn't the switch in my case.

I can take a photo of the manual page if you need it.
