1970T Engine # Question

I have a 1970T that was purchased new in Germany (by an American serviceman). It was a June 1970 build Karmann Coupe (build # 3697). It has a 911/01 5 speed manual transmission (# 7701356). This all matches the Porsche Production Specifications that I got from the factory.

The Specifications say it had a 911/07 engine. I believe it has the original motor. However, my confusion is the engine number, which is 6109446. By everything I can find, that number looks like US Sportomatic engine.

Two questions. First, am I decoding that number correctly (as a Sportomatic motor)? Second, if so, is there any way it could have left the factory with that motor?

I would suggest you look for engine type #. If you at the bottom of the vertical serial # boss, then look slightly forward on the horizontal position of the engine case. You will find the type#, sometimes hidden by engine grime. Rob

Locating the engine type should help quite a bit. Engine numbers can be a bit wonky to decode.

The table that I have shows two sets of ranges for Type 911/07 (USA) engines in 1969/1970 911T models. The engine number ranges are 610 5001 - 610 7999 and 610 8501 - 610 9955. That second range seems to be where your engine number lands.

The USA sporto engine numbers fall in the middle range: 610 8001 - 610 8374. Sporto cars should also have a 911/08 engine type number.

Engine type is 911/07. So it sounds like it is in the second group that Rich mentions.

Let me throw this out to you, as it will probably come up at some point in the future.

The Porsche Red Book is often cited as a great resource, and it contradicts Rich's info:

That second range of numbers is shown here as a 911E Type 911/01 engine. But this must be wrong, as it is different from what you know you own.

Is your VIN in the 9110120001-9110124126 range?

Mark,
Yes, VIN is in that range: xxxxxx3697. Seems like different sources all have different information on engine numbers. I know from the Porsche Production Specifications that it is a ‘70 T Karmann Coupe that came with a 911/07 engine. All that matches as (as does everything else on the car). It is just the higher range engine # (9446) that seems to be throwing everything off.
