cheap sunvisors talk for early 911 - better ideas?

Just a minor issue but enough to bother about.

My 84 has the OEM cheap sunvisors and the inside of them seem to be degrading. Also, prior to when I acquired the car, the mirror seems as if it was cleaned with a scouring pad I could care less of a mirror but it looks like hell.

Is there a better quality visor that copies the exact look of the original and without the mirrors?

Has anyone taken the time to redo the original visors?

I have visors which were re-done by a PO. They obtained some nice leather visors and shortened them to fit the width of the window. They look nice and function well, but I have to rotate the rear-view mirror whenever I want to flip the visors up or down.

I can post some pictures if you would like, but it almost certainly isn't the look of the originals.

I removed mine and installed a new headliner without the holes. Now I wear sunglasses. The car looks cooler. Me, not so much...

There are some Repro's on Ebay...not sure of the quality. Anybody ever buy a set of these and install? How do they look? Functional?
Thanks

Why not purchase the ones from our host as they offer ones that have the little mirror "doors' that hide the mirror....

Yes, I had looked at them and considered. As expected are sort of steep price OEM.... just under $300 pair. Those listed seem like slightly improved 87+ version, and the mirror with cover door is good. Might bite but still looking to see if there's another choice.

Also curious if the 85 / 86 MY and back are just from the VW parts bin?

The other option is to get a pair of the Porsche Classic Parts sun visors. Porsche is manufacturing the '80s era visors again.

Not cheap, but correct fit.

I think there's a guy who recovers them for about $75 or so. On my phone, so it's a PITA to search and post the link up, but try searching this forum. I'll try to post the link tomorrow.

I've actually just started formulating a plan to build a few for my Targa.

I am going to order a 24"x36"x.25" of Carbon Fiber sheet and fab a couple visors, rivet in a mirror on each and convert the hardware over.

I'm hoping to make them have a bit of a higher angle as to divert some air flow over the open top of the car instead of it buffeting in/around the back window. Kind of like a windshield on a Morgan

On my targa, I cut them in half along the dotted line Porsche provided, then covered them in alcantara - much nicer size IMHO, the originals were huge!

Classic 9 upholstery redid mine. The only thing he keeps is the wire frame. New foam and covered in vinyl or leather. My problem? The new headliner is already in the car and tight like a drum head. I am worried about cutting a hole in it for the hinge pin, afraid that the headline will tear.

I bought a pair for my targa from this guy in Austria. Very nice. (Doesn't seem to have targa ones for sale any more)

Targa Sunvisors -

A friend ordered a NEW Pair of Sun Visors for his 1979 - Targa on Ebay. They include the mounting hardware and look (virtually) identical to the original OEM in Black Vinyl. The fit and finish was nice but no long term wear and tear experience to report on yet. They may be worth considering for $65 + $18 shipping......

Good Luck - Michael

If anyone has purchased the Porsche Classic visors, please chime in, as I am curious about how they actually fit and look. They are incredibly pricey at about $970/pair, but all other options I have seen don't give you a factory look. Trying to find any NOS is impossible, and used ones are usually about as bad as my original ones. I can't understand why no one can make a decent set of original looking visors or a visor refurbishment service for a reasonable amount. I don't mind paying more for a decent set, but come on Porsche, $1100 (after tax) for 2 visors?

Sheesh 1100 bucks. That's nuts. I'd do it though if it was concourse. If not, go with classic 9. I went with some repros from Partsklassic and they look and feel cheap. They are too thin and don't seem to fit very well.

When this thread originated (2013) Porsche Classic sun visors were very expensive.

Now a days the price is a lot less @ $ 144 each

After Market - Option

Why wouldn't our host go directly to the Ebay vender and stock these sun visors as an after market option ? From all the internet discussions there are quite a few 911 daily drivers looking for an alternative to a pair of OEM show quality parts.

A friend's Targa that I'm helping to get back on the road is much more interested in putting his funds into the drivetrain initially. Next is paint.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Sun-Visor-Set-Black-For-PORSCHE-911-64-79-91173103242/401640262394?epid=18026148078&hash=item5d83a00afa:g:ziAAAOSwBZBb87Jm:rk:37

Shoot - our host could order these sunvisors in bulk - double the price and still sell a ship load......
