Burnt plastic smell 1987 911 3.2

Hey everyone,

Was out for a drive today and noticed a burnt plastic smell for a few moments right after I turned the heater control dial to "2" and the blower fan (I think) to the right. The top right lever. I've put an arrow pointing to it in the pictures attached.

They're the only things I touched.

I'm pretty sure they're both on fused lines? Any ideas? Got me stumped. Not sure where to start checking, or if it was maybe just a coincidence and it came from outside the car on the highway.

Most or all of the lights behind the dash are not fused. I think that includes the light for the heater controls. That's what I would look for first. And no matter what you find, install a fuse to the dash light circuit.

It was during the day. The lights were not turned on, so I think that would eliminate that. If it was at night, I'd say 100%?

The top right lever you are pointing in your first pic controls the fresh air blower, which is known to fail and seize when old. This might be your burnt plastic smell source. You should clearly hear it run when the lever is fully pushed to the right and ignition is on (but engine off so you can listen to it). If you don't hear anything the blower is probably shot or its fuse has tripped.
Also, it is run and managed separately from the heater. Different units powered from different lines and fuses.

Thanks for the reply. The blower still runs. So I don't believe it's that?

Distinguish smell--burnt plastic is very different from burnt vinyl (wire insulation). Which is it?

Burnt nylon has a different smell too. Think about burning nylon cord or rope ends (to keep them from unraveling).

The fan icon (on the right of this pic) illuminates, regardless of headlight switch position, when the fresh air blower fan is switched on.
