Back when she had her VW Squareback, my mom would just place a brick on the wood stove, then when she was ready to go , she'd wrap it in a towel and set it on the dash for defrost.

I imagine that how well a small electric heater works is also dependent on how cold it is inside your car.

If it is 40 or 50 degrees F, it can probably put out some heat, but if the inlet temp was in the teens, the output would likely be minimal.

If we are just talking fog, there is an old racer's trick. Put shaving cream on the interior windshield and then wipe it off. It actually keeps the fog away.

Interesting...similar to the the old scuba mask trick, but a lot easier than trying to muster up a windshield worth of spit I've seen a lot of people suggest rain-x as well.
