Motor Mount Question

I bought the Rennline HD engine/transmission mounts from our host, and I'm planning on installing them this spring. As many of you may know, they are inserts only, which go into the football shaped steel supports that bolt to the chassis. They slip into the supports from the top and bottom.

My question is regarding the existing factory ones that I'll be removing. Are the inserts of these mounts easily removed? Do they come apart similarly to the Rennline HDs? Is the easiest way to remove the inserts a matter of cutting the rubber part with a knife? Or must they be pressed or burned/melted out?

Thanks.

Why would you need to disassemble the stockers
the Rennlines come complete ready to bolt in

Those are the tunable mounts, Bill. Paul is asking about their HD rubber product, where it does seem like you need to somehow remove the rubber inserts of the factory mounts. In this regard the Rennline mount seems similar to their front shock tower camber plate replacement bushing.

No idea how one removes the factory rubber - interesting that there don't seem to be any threads here from people that have installed them.

I have an extra set of motor mounts and at one point was considering swapping the stock rubber for some polyurethane inserts.

I found the rubber was well-bonded to the steel shell. I pressed out the steel insert (with some considerable force) and then tried cutting the rubber out with a knife. I wasn't successful at that and so ran a hole saw through the center and then tried to peel the rubber out. That wasn't going well and so I tried burning it out with a torch. That worked, but now I have crummy-looking steel shells. I haven't bothered to blast them and replate them yet...

Hi Bill is that a custom 3.6 conversion to G body rear cross member? Thanks, Kevin.

Removing the rubber inserts from stock 911 engine mounts isn’t easy. As mentioned above, I found it best to press them out. If you don’t have a shop press, I think I once used a gear puller tool to do it.

It's for a 993 engine in a '76 911, but it's just a standard 911 SS RSR style crossbar, the mounts are Rennline, the f/g surrounds are Sheridan for 993 in a 911, the engine mount console is 3.2 Carrera

I had to bend my factory cross bar to fit my car, did you have to bend the ss rsr bar?

No, I do recall having to bend the o.e. 993 and 964 crossbars but they need to use the aluminum 964/993 engine mount console and modified 964/993 surrounds

W/ that set up the engine fits just like any other 911, thought the aircleaner does become a bit of an issue

w/ the 964/993 mounting parts the engine sits ~1.25" low in back

here's the o.e 964/993 parts w/ the Sheridan surrounds, according to Roger Sheridan it doesn't work, but this fellow made it work, He did report that the rear of the engine is a bit low but it's not the sheetmetal causing that as w/ the o.e stuff

I would really like to take the cone off and put a stock box on. i believe my cross bar is lowered 1+-". Thanks Bill for the info.

The stock air box should fit w/ either engine mount scheme

here's w/ the 964/993 setup, not that it's only the cover that interferes w/ the hinge on the right

a 964 has a different issue in that the top of the intake stack is a bit taller than that of a 993, it runs into the bottom of the package try w/ the 9111 setup

Is there any benefit to the fiberglass engine shrouds/tins? Apart from weight savings and looking cool?

In the case of a 3.6 transplant, yes, the Sheridan f/g surrounds allow the 993 engine to sit the same as any other 911 engine, the 964/993 parts force the rear of the engine down ~1.25"

3.6 tin surrounds, even when modified for use in a 922 are quite tall
same engine 2 different mounting methods, note the height of the crank pully relative to the 'tin'

Ah gotchya. Pretty surprising how much lower the engines in 911s sit VS 964/993
