Motor Mount Question
I bought the Rennline HD engine/transmission mounts from our host, and I'm planning on installing them this spring. As many of you may know, they are inserts only, which go into the football shaped steel supports that bolt to the chassis. They slip into the supports from the top and bottom.
My question is regarding the existing factory ones that I'll be removing. Are the inserts of these mounts easily removed? Do they come apart similarly to the Rennline HDs? Is the easiest way to remove the inserts a matter of cutting the rubber part with a knife? Or must they be pressed or burned/melted out? Thanks. |

the Rennlines come complete ready to bolt in http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1737404365.JPG |
Those are the tunable mounts, Bill. Paul is asking about their HD rubber product, where it does seem like you need to somehow remove the rubber inserts of the factory mounts. In this regard the Rennline mount seems similar to their front shock tower camber plate replacement bushing.
No idea how one removes the factory rubber - interesting that there don't seem to be any threads here from people that have installed them. Mark |
I have an extra set of motor mounts and at one point was considering swapping the stock rubber for some polyurethane inserts.
I found the rubber was well-bonded to the steel shell. I pressed out the steel insert (with some considerable force) and then tried cutting the rubber out with a knife. I wasn't successful at that and so ran a hole saw through the center and then tried to peel the rubber out. That wasn't going well and so I tried burning it out with a torch. That worked, but now I have crummy-looking steel shells. I haven't bothered to blast them and replate them yet... |

Removing the rubber inserts from stock 911 engine mounts isn’t easy. As mentioned above, I found it best to press them out. If you don’t have a shop press, I think I once used a gear puller tool to do it.

W/ that set up the engine fits just like any other 911, thought the aircleaner does become a bit of an issue w/ the 964/993 mounting parts the engine sits ~1.25" low in back http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1737500111.JPG Here' the oe 964/99 parts http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1737500111.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1737500111.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1737500111.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1737500111.jpg here's the o.e 964/993 parts w/ the Sheridan surrounds, according to Roger Sheridan it doesn't work, but this fellow made it work, He did report that the rear of the engine is a bit low but it's not the sheetmetal causing that as w/ the o.e stuff http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1737500111.jpg |

here's w/ the 964/993 setup, not that it's only the cover that interferes w/ the hinge on the right http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1737569587.JPG http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1737569587.JPG a 964 has a different issue in that the top of the intake stack is a bit taller than that of a 993, it runs into the bottom of the package try w/ the 9111 setup |
Is there any benefit to the fiberglass engine shrouds/tins? Apart from weight savings and looking cool?

3.6 tin surrounds, even when modified for use in a 922 are quite tall same engine 2 different mounting methods, note the height of the crank pully relative to the 'tin' 964/993 http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1737579034.JPG 911 3.2 http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1737579034.JPG |
Ah gotchya. Pretty surprising how much lower the engines in 911s sit VS 964/993
