Valve Cover Stud Mystery
I’m about to do a valve adjustment on my 3.2 and a couple of studs came out while I was removing the lower valve covers. While putting them back in, I noticed that one stud did not match all of the others. The stud in question has an elongated (non-threaded) center, with each of the threaded ends about the same size. All of the other studs have a smaller non-threaded center with long threads in one end and short threads on the other (see comparison photo, attached). What gives? Is this a case of Porsche engineering gone wild or a screw up by the last guy who adjusted the valves? Thx.

Someone has replaced a stud - with an off the shelf generic stud. No issues as long as it all matches up OK for thread engagement etc.
Given they were loose anyway - one may have fallen out at some time. Who knows? Alan

They're the same length. Don't worry about it. No one but you will know.

50+ year old cars. Lots of people have touched these cars and have done all kinds of “fixes”.
