Help: Question about rear axle shaft replacement
 

Hello,

I need to replace a rear axle shaft on the driver side on my '85 911 Carrera 3.2 (915 trans).

After doing some basic research, I have found two different potential replacement part numbers but I am not sure which one is the correct one (they are both said to fit my car on Pelicans but look quite different):

For context, I found an invoice from Porsche for my car where they replaced the passenger side rear axle a few years ago using the first one that starts with the #923 part number.

1 - Why would the part start with the number "#923" and not a "#911" number?
2 - The two parts look different -- the one with the "#911" number has an extended shaft on the other side of the joint.

Would appreciate any insight and help in figuring out which one I am supposed to get.

The 923 is for transmissions 915.67 or 68.
The 911 is for later types. My guess is that you have the early type (923), since that's what you already have on passenger side.
The easiest way to find out is by looking at the CV on the wheel side. If the wheel side has bolts, you need the older (923) type. If you don't see any bolts you need the later 911 type shown above, that is the one that has a non detachable axle and is the most expensive version.

85 was a transition year, gotta look for bolts.

Yea, look for what month your car was built. The early cars are different than the latter in the year cars.

Best option, call Pelican Parts, with your VIN and go from there.

Summary:
Replace any bolts that look damaged with the correct length Class 12.9 bolts (I replaced all of my bolts, several had some damage and I figured I would just start fresh)
Use new Schnorr VS washers
Consider also using moon plates
Torque to 33 ft/lbs
