Help: Question about rear axle shaft replacement
Hello,
I need to replace a rear axle shaft on the driver side on my '85 911 Carrera 3.2 (915 trans). After doing some basic research, I have found two different potential replacement part numbers but I am not sure which one is the correct one (they are both said to fit my car on Pelicans but look quite different): - Part#: 923-332-033-02-INT: https://www.pelicanparts.com/More_Info/92333203302.htm?pn=923-332-033-02-INT&srsltid=AfmBOorPvUqjjiY2wzaQPt0K1H_xmOwmhRiWe-IciXiwkomGBtyEFeOf3co - Part#: 911-332-024-16-M60 https://www.pelicanparts.com/More_Info/91133202416.htm?pn=911-332-024-16-M60&gad_source=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjw7dm-BhCoARIsALFk4v9MNHYLkpU0NyGc3_AiTO-CgWtMFPEQNyo9ftgKkWey-i6nYNL22oAaAlBvEALw_wcB For context, I found an invoice from Porsche for my car where they replaced the passenger side rear axle a few years ago using the first one that starts with the #923 part number. 1 - Why would the part start with the number "#923" and not a "#911" number? 2 - The two parts look different -- the one with the "#911" number has an extended shaft on the other side of the joint. Would appreciate any insight and help in figuring out which one I am supposed to get. Many thanks. The 923 is for transmissions 915.67 or 68.
The 911 is for later types. My guess is that you have the early type (923), since that's what you already have on passenger side. The easiest way to find out is by looking at the CV on the wheel side. If the wheel side has bolts, you need the older (923) type. If you don't see any bolts you need the later 911 type shown above, that is the one that has a non detachable axle and is the most expensive version. |
Thank you so much, Gilles! I believe I have the bolts on the wheel side so your guess is likely the right one!

Recommend you download a free copy of the parts Katalog here:
https://assets-v2.porsche.com/ca/-/media/Project/PCOM/SharedSite/PorscheClassic/Original-Parts-Catalogue/PDF-EN-US/KAT507_USA_911_86_KATALOG Search the PDF for “rear axle” and you will get to these pages, first a diagram, and then on the next page, the part number based on the transmission version: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1742157456.jpg And the part number info, see detail ar right for the applicable version: http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1742157532.jpg |
Thank you so much, Brian!

85 was a transition year, gotta look for bolts.

Yea, look for what month your car was built. The early cars are different than the latter in the year cars.
Best option, call Pelican Parts, with your VIN and go from there. |

Sorry to go off target here, but is there a searchable database like RealOEM for BMW, but for Porsche?
