911SC heater back date question
 

I’m in the process of back dating the heater in my 911SC. Partly due to the blower in the engine bay being non functional and partly to open up some space in the engine compartment.

After reading a bunch of threads and looking at the parts I’m left wondering why you couldn’t simply use a reducer and attach the left side air hose directly to the existing plastic vent? I can’t seem to get my pictures to upload right this moment to illustrate.

I haven’t started fitting the left side heater duct but it seems like they sometimes require a bit of work to accommodate the distributor. The existing left side heater duct coming off the engine fan duct is already there and fits so it seemed like a reasonable question to ask. Thanks!

You can reduce the current left side outlet and run it that way. You'll end up with a loop of heater hose to get the right angle to enter the inlet on the engine tin however. There's a few people who've posted photos doing it this way. I ran mine that way for awhile as well and it works just fine. When I was doing some other work, I ended up installing the 930 left side duct to clean up my engine bay some more. Works just the same but looks visually cleaner but it also costs quite a bit more for no performance difference with the heat.

Thanks, long term I will install the left side heater duct because it is a better/cleaner set up. For now though it seemed like a good interim measure. Living in the south I rarely use the heater, most of the time I could easily get rid of the whole heater system. But I’m also wanting to do some longer road trips where it would be required.

I couldn’t really find what I was looking for online to get the stock plastic SC heater duct down to the size of the hose. Necessity being the mother of invention I went to Wal Mart and took a look around.

I now suspect I may be the first person to make an interim back date the heat system using a cocktail shaker.

The top of the shaker bottle turns out to be very nicely contoured to adapt between the two sizes… it just doesn’t quite fit due to the way the top and bottom of the shaker bottle are designed to stick together.

A bit of work with the Dremel slotting around the perimeter so that it can be attached with a hose clamp. Then use a hammer and pliers to open things up slightly so it will fit on the heater duct.

Now it fits in perfectly, the lip of the heater duct tube fits up very nicely with the inside of of my adapter and once the hose clamp is installed it starts looking like a actual part rather than half of a cocktail shaker bottle.

Completed homemade heater back date for the left side… going in I was going to install the actual back date heater duct but that’s now going to wait until I get around to dropping the engine.

Total cost was $12 for the stainless cocktail shaker at Wal Mart. I’m not going to mess with the right side until the engine gets dropped as I rarely use the heater and definitely won’t need it for the next six months.
