CV joint C-clip Removed, Won't Come Apart
Trying to replace a torn boot on my low mile '87 CV axles with 4 new boots. The inboard CV (bolts to trans) c-clip is removed but the cage/bearing assembly refuses to slide off the splined axle. I have tried PB Blaster, punch/hammer, some heat, and it will not budge. Nothing is holding it on in a parts diagram and all videos show it sliding off once the c-clip is removed. These are original CV axles, no corrosion evident, etc, so I'm at that WTF moment. Any suggestions besides buying new complete CV axles?
Note: I know the outboard/wheel side of the CV is not rebuildable (friction welded) but the joint is good, just needs new boots but I can't get the inboard CV joint off the axle shaft. |
I had to use a pulley puller last go.

Some slide off, some don't. pull back the boot and use a brass hammer on the inner race, and a blunt air hammer bit if it still resists.

Had to use some persuasion when I did mine. I remember being stuck in the same situation and asking for help and insight on the French forum. What I did is clamp the axle in a vice and hammer the inner race by tapping with a punch and hammer. BFH in my case, as it had more inertia and power and I was replacing the CV anyway.
