G50 gearbox stuck in 1-2 plane

The box is out of the car and the shift rod is stuck in a single shift plane (1-2) and cannot be rotated to R or 3-4 or 5-6 plane. It looks like I have to remove the nose, and the intermediate housing before I can figure out what the lock-up is.

I am going into the gearbox for a refresh anyway but I would like to have some idea of where the problem could be.

6 speed gearboxes had occasional problems with the shift spindle breaking in the bearing retainer. A motorsports part or aftermarket part is available. They were stock in the RS.

Where would this shift spindle be?

Are you sure that it's not in the 3-4 shift plane? They're hard to shift when the trans it out of the car. Give yourself something with more leverage and try again.

None of the shift mechanisms will be accessible without removing the intermediate case. You'd need to take off more than the nose housing. As Gordon said, it's all part of the bearing retainer.

It's first gear. I was able to drive it in first gear to put it on the lift. Once all the shifter stuff is removed, I attached a 5 inch M8 bolt to the shift rod and the only plane available is the one seen below. Not straight up and down like a 3-4 plane but slightly off to the left, which is the 1-2 plane.

Porsche calls it a "bearing shaft," and it's part of the shift control and tensioning plate assembly. I've seen them break, serviced one earlier this year, photo below. The RS version from Porsche or Guard Transmission's chrome moly version are good options.

I can't say with certainty this is the OP's problem, but it is one possibility. Regardless, the transmission will need to be opened up to diagnose and correct the issue. Cheers,

Found the problem and it's the bearing shaft, I am starting a rebuild thread here.
