Brake lights not working 1967
Hey guys hope anyone can help me out sorting out the issue with my 1967 911 brake lights, it’s been driving me crazy. All of my other lights are working blinkers, running lights, and hazards. I’ve removed both taillights and cleaned all the connections and ensured that the bulbs are fully seated and have contact. As well as ensured that none of bulbs are out and inserted in the proper orientation. Most recently I changed all the female connections, cleaned the wires, and checked that the brake reservoir has fluid since the switch relies on pressure, but have had no luck. What else should I be checking?
Thank you ![]() |

I'd start by going to the brake light switch at the pedal, I believe and connecting the two wires together, bypassing the switch, if the lights turn on, with the key on, the switch needs to be cleaned, fixed, adjusted or replaced.
my slightly later cars all have a simple switch, but on that switch is a flat head screw with a small (6mm, 7mm) locknut. if you are lucky, it's the early switch design with a brass screw and locknut. Most times, I'm able to back out the screw, clean the tip, which is either oxidized or heavily covered in grime.....and then reach in the hole with a pick-tool and scrape away the build-up on the contact area. Reassemble with approximately the same number of turns on the screwed, or the same amount of threads showing, and lock down the screw. You can adjust how much or little brake action will make the lights turn on. I've done this for several friends, in the parking lots of various driving events, start to finish should be 15 minutes once you get the lay of the land.

IIRC, the 1967 uses a switch mounted on the pedal box, rather than a hydraulic pressure switch. Check to be sure.

It's a simple system, one black-yellow that comes from the first fuse , from there it goes to the switch. A 2nd wire runs from the switch towards an internal splice and from that splice one wire to the left and the other to the right rearlight.

I thought that in 67 models the switch is located at the master cylinder ?

The Pelican catalog shows a pedal switch for 1967 911’s.

I just last weekend found same problem, every lamp worked but sudden loss of rear brake lights and only noticed this backing up into dark garage.
Before taking any bulbs out, before jumping the wires, I removed the pressure switch connectors on the master cylinder (I have two) and cleaned the female connector ends with CRC QD Electronics Cleaner and brass brushed the male switch terminals. Nothing stood out as corroded, maybe a tad bit tarnished. Pushed connectors back into switches. Tried the pedal again and voila - brake lights worked thereafter. Sometimes just disconnecting the plugs for few minutes will reset the switches, as will disconnecting battery. So check your application - either a pedal switch or master cylinder switch and clean terminals on either. If that doesn’t work then you’ll have try to jump wires to check if replacement switches are needed. |
