Do I need to upgrade the clutch with a 3.2 to 3.4 conversion?
Just getting ready to put everything together and the question of my clutch came up. I was going to keep my very low mileage original and use that for now. It has only 50,000 miles on it and everything is in very good shape.
The car is a 1986, 3.2 to 3.4 build. Mahle P&C (98mm/10.5CR), 993ss cams, twin plugged and will be 100% street. Country roads and long cross country trips. No tracks, etc... I see a lot go with the Sachs 'power clutch' (or other options) and wondering if that would be highly recommended or will I be fine with the factory set up with the 3.4 and my 915? Keeping this simple and quick but just wondered what other builders have done? If this is another while you are in there...well, curse you all! Thanks- Erik |

Used to have a racier clutch in there, it was fine on the track but it's on/off nature was a PIA on the street. |
No

Whu? I didn’t. Got a light weight flywheel. Sachs’s clutch
I had a Tilton triple doohicky clutch on/off switch. Impossible for street driving. (For sale) |
Erik, I have much the same setup as you do and the stock clutch is fine. No issues on the few track days too. I did have the Sachs aluminum pressure plate in for 2 seasons but found it was less street friendly as compared to the heavier stock one.

I have been getting input like this locally and at events. Loads of "PIA on the street" comments... Erik |

Thanks for the various input. My gut was to stay stock with this one but everything is still apart for a few more days and thought was upgrade. I will be staying stock and report back if there is any issues over the next year with the new engine. Thanks everyone! Erik |
I run the Sachs power clutch kit (and just put in a fresh disc) on my 3.2SS build — and when it was a stock 3.0SC as well. Now have a LW flywheel too.
Driveability very good, and although I don't commute in it, I still have to suffer NYC traffic on the way back into the city from a drive. Was in LA traffic two weeks ago when I had it on the west coast. Not on/off, easy to feather, doesn't slip under load. |

Thanks for the input. At least I know if I am not happy there are a few of you that like the upgrade to the Sachs. Again, thank you! Erik |
