Passenger door light switch

Does the passenger door trigger the dome light in side the car (86 carerra). The driver door triggers the dome light, but not the passenger. I am assuming that the door switch is out?

they should both turn on the dome light. Wiggle the switch and see if it causes the light to come on. It may be loose. Fortunately the switches are cheap.

You may also have a stand-by current drain with a bad switch. Normally, when the car is turned "off" and you're still in the car, you can open/close the power windows...as long as you don't exit the car. Once you open / close the door, the power windos won't operate. All this is triggered by a functioning dome light switch. If switch is bad, your PW may work *all* the time..and that circuit will always be hot...causing standby battery drain.
Go after this and check......

The switch housing provides a ground to the body. This is probably corroded, mine was. Pull out the switch, clean off the corrosion on the switch and where it makes contact with the body, should work ok. Otherwise could be the switch, should be able to test though with multi meter or by grounding the high side of the switch.

How do you pull out this switch? Pull towards door, push towards head lights or unscrew? It is sealed pretty tight with a rubber washer.

thanks

Not sure if yours is different than my 86. Mine has a nut attaching the switch to the door frame. Remove the nut, then pull it out towards the door. My rubber washer/ grommet was also a bit worn.

Careful !.....
As you pull the switch toward you (after you unscrew)..and you remove the wire...it has a tendency to slip off your fingers and ...Yooop....the wire disappears behind the front fender sheet metal.

Not fun......
