Where is my horn?

My 82SC horn is weak to say the least. Where is it located and should it be a dual horn system and what can I do to make it better if I discover it is shot?

Thanks

it's under the right front fender, dual horns. have a friend honk it while you look at them, wiggle the wires if one is not working. Anything more in depth you will have to take it to a mechanic. Or man up and get a manual. There is a ton of information you can learn from it. Also, not to belittle you but, you joined Pelican Dec 2008 and you still don't know where the horns are? When did you get your car? What else do you want to know? Sorry to be harsh but c'mon.

As James with the tasteful Minverva Blue color has said, under the right front fender possibly sight obstructed by your radiator.

Connections for sure but also can remove them and work the nut/adjusting screw you find on the back steel plate of most horns. Bench test by slight adjustments w/ screwdriver while connected to 12v to find the right tone. Wear ear protection.

With the help of a Bentley, check out your horn relay and the ground.

Good luck,

Gerry

I agree.........first check the connections to both horns. There are dual "trumpets" mounted under there. One is a high tone and the other a low tone. If one is actually "dead", you can purchase one separately.

Get a Bentley manual.

Much easier to work on if you remove the RF wheel.

You should have 2 trumpets in there (high/low are short/long), but I've seen a couple cars that had them removed and replaced with a little VW horn.

If one horn works, your relay is probably OK.

It's usually the wiring.

He was probably driving it more than I drive mine - but ya' know Jim, when you're right, you're right! LOL

Good luck Neal - I have to look at mine too, I am missing a tone.

If one trumpet goes, the other sounds very weak - it's the harmonics between the two (carefully chosen) high/low notes that gives the horn the penetrating sound.

It's not always the wiring- I only had one trumpet on my car when I got it, and it sounded pathetic. Then it died a few months later - and still had power to the spade when operating the horn...

996 TT horns are a fraction of the weight of SC trumpets, retain the same tone/harmonics (factory retained the same frequencies) - and much cheaper. Important to get the kit with the special connectors and the weatherseal boots for the wires, given where they're located - right in the spray coming off the wheel...

Alternatively, a pair of Bosch 944/928 high/low horns would work as well (and probably take the original spade), for $20 each.

I removed the original trumpet and fitted the new bracket and both 996 horns working round the side of a 225/45/17 in 20 minutes. Would have been easier with the wheel off.

Result? Pleasing harmonic sound - yet loud and penetrating. Another mark off for concours, but that's not going to keep me awake.

The original horns have a "cute air horn sound" but not very loud. 996 ones sound louder than good, stock SC ones?

I installed this compact, self-contained air horn. It's pretty small (designed for motorcycles). Had a cement truck driver about crap his pants when he started over into my lane and I let him have it. Nice and loud:

Dunno, you have any neighbors you don't like? We could do a side-by-side comparison...

They're polite and melodious when you just tap them for the dweeb texting when the light changes, but they get loud pretty quick should you lean on them in earnest - factory fitment on a 189MPH car, after all...

Thanks for pointing to that Wolo, my car came with no horn but I can hear the relay clicking when I ground out the wire inside my wheel (where there is no horn button at the moment ) If Wayne doesn't have them the major book website has them with free shipping and a sound clip for plenty cheap enough, for those of us rather unconcerned with originality.

So thanks to this thread I know where to put it and that it should have power going to a couple of those wires hanging out over there under the headlight Reading this board regularly provides me with an endless supply of..."oh yeah, my car needs that done too[s]"

Thanks!

I don't have one personally, but as mentioned in the thread above, you can find one there. The horn sounds almost like a typical Ferrari/European air horn.

Model 419, yes.

Not sure where the stock horn mounts, as my car has been modified with a 993 kit. I installed the horn in the driver's side fenderwell, forward of the wheel.

Here's the clip. Turn your speakers to 11: http://www.wolo-mfg.com/419-519-stereo.wav
