Ultimate Targa Thread!
I know I stole the backdating thread title, but I feel Targas have such a bad rap and need to band together and show some solidarity.
Let's post pics and talk about the finicky ways of our beloved Targa Top. Let's Go!!! |
Targa...
My dad had a 75 euro-spec "S" back in the 80s. I was in my "early childhood" at the time, and that car left a lasting impression on me (infact, I think THAT car is what started it all... ).
It was a rare ice-green color with green leather interior. I'm a devoted Targa fan, so thanks for starting the thread. Hopefully others will chime in. The day he sold that car was one of the sadest of my life. The other was when we sold the 58 Speedster we were restoring . |

I really like my Targa, especially with the top off! The top is original and still looks like new. No air or water leaks but there is an annoying rattle on bumpy roads from the rear of the top. I may visit Dan Petchel in NJ to address the problem.

Annoying rattle?? In a Targa?
I'm shocked. Mine I've had since 2000, interior was refurbed (and top rebuilt) by Autos Int'l in Escondido, CA, engine/electrical refurb by a local wrench there, exterior detailing by moi over a lousy repaint job arranged by the PO. The top is very noisy -- it doesn't lock down smoothly to the windscreen, so the wind noise is pretty consistent, and rolling over rough road will cause enough creaks and snaps to convince you the top is breaking. Solution? Take it off and enjoy the fresh air (and heat, here in Austin). Worth every minute, especially at speed. Cheers! C. |
No wind or water noise here, some tops just take a lot of fine tuning to get right. I had to adjust mine several times to get it right. Also the PO had recently changed all of the seals around top for a tight rattle free fit.
Yesterday a buddy of mine and me drove down from Michigan to Ohio in my Targa. It was an awesome ride - top of, nice bursts of speed when possible, just a great ride! |
The ultimate Targa thread? Guess I better start posting some photos .....

One of my favorite Targa's is Chris Campbell's old car .....

Try a light coat of silicone grease on your seals. It allows the top to move with the body flex and stops much of the noise

Here's a last summer, stock 79 and this summer during backdate. More to come, should be in paint next week.
