2.4 turbo??
 

A local guy has a "68 911 with 2.4 liter with a turbo. It's a nice looking car and a seemingly reasonable price but strapping a turbo onto an engine that's not built for it kind of scares me. Does anybody have any experience with this? Aren't turbo's 4 speeds to handle all the extra torque? Any idea of a market for this? Here's the specs.

If they can boost a 3.2 than you can boost a 2.4. If it was done by someone that did their homework a low boost smallbore could kick a$$. it sounds like it could be a cool hotrod 911

Purist here. Man that car should be the S**T! A 2.4 done right and with the correct boost will be a bada** car! What's done is done, why worry about what others will say. Although they would probably say" Christ this thing FLYS" . There!

The factory boosted a 1.9L(i think that's right) called the 935 baby. Any purist should know that ;-)...

I thought of this when I had a CIS 2.4. The CIS 2.4 has low compression and it's easy to get enough fuel from CIS parts that occur naturally in a junkyard environment. Just plumb a Volvo or SAAB system basicly.

Wouldn't the added compression from the turbo be too great for the 2.4 or does the waste gate moderate that. I'm pretty new to the modifying end of it and am a bit leery about blowing holes in the pistons.

The mythical purists are rarely sighted here.

Just be sure you prep the case well.

My buddy who was a mechanic at Andial for 10+ years was trying to get me to go to the junk yard and get a turbo off of a Dodge Omni GLH (2.2L just like mine) and fuel injectros off of an Audi 5 cylinder ( same cylinder voulme as mine) and a couple of hundred on electronics. He said, sure it will be kind of frankenstine but who cares its your car. I skipped it becasue I just love the way webbers look in the engine compartment. But yes it can be done very reasonibly and depending on how low the boost is could be painless for the motor.

find out how long it has been boosted, if it has lived more than a month or two it should be set up ok.
if you want to learn about turbos do a search here for (sc turbo) or (megasquirt turbo) then get the book (maximum boost) after that you will have made up your mind about boosted 911's....hey get some pic's for us we love that stuff.

dont forget the 580 hp 2.1 liter 936 engine

did you get any more info on the car, how the turbo was applied, type and plumbing issue ?

I didn't. He was kind of tough to get a hold of and we kind of put the project on the shelf. We were looking for a good track car for a reasonable price and decided to wait for a bit. I wanted to get out to see the car but if I wasn't really serious about buying it I didn't want to waste the guys time. I'll bet he gets a fair amount of tire kickers.

In the mean time I got a chance to get around the Brainerd International Raceway with an instructor from the local Porsche club in his "81 SC. 130 mph pretty easily. I think I may be changing my priorities a bit. :-))

SC is a good track car; reliable too. Newly designed turbo systems rarely escape teething issues.

I agree. I was pretty impressed by what a basically unmodified 3.0 engine could do and reliability is a big factor.

Get a PPI, even if you already expect the car to need a lot of work :D
