I spent about 5 min putting this table together this morning from memory. I'm not too up on racing, so I'm sure there are a lot of holes (I missed the Cayenne too). Maybe as a community, we could fill it in...

You missed the 910, the 934, the 956, 962, and probably a few others. (These are all racecars).

Good list to have, though. Hopefully others will contribute and help fill in the gaps.

layzee 08-12-2004 05:51 AM

Cayenne is 955?

989 was a 4 door 928 prototype iirc?
965 - 964 Turbo
Think 925 is 924 turbo also

Dutchie 08-12-2004 06:13 AM

The 905 was not used because of Peugeot if i,m right, they claimed all numbers ending 05.

Dr. Bill Block and I have been tinkering with this list since the ‘60s. If you want a copy in Excel format please e-mail me at gradyclay@hotmail.com with your e-mail address. It covers Porsche Type 7 through Type 3512 Arrows F1 3.5 V-10 and has references, dates, and more. I keep a copy in my Excellence Was Expected, 2ed. index.

I’m sure there are more to be filled in. If you can, please include references, sources, etc.

Best,
Grady

VaSteve 08-12-2004 07:47 AM

Wow, I like Grady's List better than mine!!

Grady: Items such as 925, does that define the a whole car, or just the transmission?

304065 08-12-2004 07:48 AM

Grady,

I am sitting here rubbing my chin from where my jaw dropped. That is one heck of a list.

Does 914/6 count ?

svandamme 08-12-2004 07:52 AM

963 was an RS version
942 was a 928 estate

svandamme 08-12-2004 07:56 AM

wouldn't the factory be able to fill in the missing numbers? if somebody asked them nicely? maybe via PCA?

also , what's the internal model designation for the Carrera GT?
is that a 9xx number? can somebody check this in PET6?

on flat6.net 966 is mentioned as a spyder race car

Grady...wow...http://www.pelicanparts.com/support/smileys/pray.gif

Carl Bauer 08-12-2004 08:24 AM

All of that info should be in the back of the 3rd book of the new set of excellence was expected.

barlowdo 08-12-2004 08:50 AM

If I wasn't a poor boy from the country I would get "excellence was expected".

It scares me what happens after they use up 999.

K-Jetronic 08-12-2004 09:20 AM

All I can find in PET6 for the carrera gt is m80.XX the 964 is designated as m64.XX so would this imply a carrera gt is a 980 or are we now talking 1080?

Joe Bob 08-12-2004 09:25 AM

987....new Boxster?
918...what did they call the two 914s with flat 8s made for the Doctor and his sister?

Carl Bauer 08-12-2004 09:34 AM

914-8

Grady Clay 08-12-2004 09:45 AM

Ed,
Peugeot protested that they used “0” as the middle number. Porsche changed 901 to 911 and 902 to 912 for the public. All the internal designations remained the same.

VaSteve,
The Type 925 designation referred just to the Soprtomatic transmission and the other parts of the car that were specific for using that transmission. Parts like the brake pedal, shift handle, etc. carry the 905/915 P/N.

John,
Thanks. Many others have compiled lists. I just tried to search with my MSN browser on “Porsche + Type + Number + Index” and didn’t find anything in the first few pages of the 42K listings. Suggestions?

Don B,
Actually a 914-6 is a Porsche Type 914. The body was manufactured, painted, and trimmed by Wilhelm Karmann GmbH in Osnabruck on a separate line from the four. The six was transported to Zuffenhausen for assembly by Porsche on the same line as 911s. You will notice the S/N of the car is 91443xzzzz, where x = 0 for a ’70, x = 1 for a ’71, and zzzz is the 4-digit sequential number. The S/N plate says “Porsche.” The serial number system was the same as the 911s of the day.
A 914-4 is a VW-Porsche by VW-Porsche Vertriebsgesellschaft GmbH (VG for short) company which was jointly (50-50) owned by Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche A.G. and Volkswagen A.G. The S/N on 914-4s is of the form 473544xxxxx for a ’75 914-4 2.0 5-speed North America Comfort Equipment. It is internally known as a Type 47. The S/N plate says VW-Porsche VG.
Of course there is a lot more than this to the VW-Porsche saga.
I owned the first 914 (a 4-cyl) in Colorado – before the dealers had seen one.

Stijn,
Can you clarify 963 & 942?

I looked at that 966 link. Could that be a custom? It appears to be a 962 with open cockpit and an air-cooled 935 engine ca. ’83 or so. It could be a 956 with mods.

This is what makes documentation of the Porsche numbers so difficult.

K-Jetronic,
You have some good ideas there. Can you find some Factory documentation or other source?

mikez,
Can you find a source?

Guys,
This subject has been researched by many. Can you find links to others’ works?

Best,
Grady

942 can be found on flat-6.net

http://www.flat-6.net/forum/showcar.php?do=overview&car_model_id=132

The 942 a one-off concept car presented to Ferry Porsche by the company on his 80th birthday. Based on a 928, the car was basically custom made for him as a birthday surprise. Porsche sure knows how to handle birthdays doesn't it... The elongated 928 was tailored from a hatchback into a station wagon type coupe. Odd, but strangely appealing. The black headlights and rear seats add a nice touch. Only one is in existence, and is currently residing in the Porsche factory museum.

the 963 single source, dunno the validity

For 987? The sales manager at the dealer showed me a memo....

barlowdo 08-12-2004 10:05 AM

Grady,

I sware I have seen 914/6 used in publications. Was it just slang or misinterpretation?

Moot point anyway since it is not a 3 digit number.
