Unhappy Well, there goes my weekend

I was playing with making some brake ducting tonight, and something funny about my sway bar caught my eye. I scraped off some of the undercoating and ...

I was going to Sears Point this weekend, but I'm not sure I can get this all dismembered, repaired, and re-membered in time.

Bummer!

Sorry, this is my fault. I just told you to stop breaking stuff.

D@mn! You can fix it. I want a good story about this weekend at the track with pictures!

Kurt, that's the vertical part of the front of the tub near the front strut. Thom's got a through the body sway bar. The tub is cracked from the stress. Seems not uncommon with heavily tracked cars with track oriented suspensions.

My advice is that you can still track it. Just throw in some more ballast on the other side, and adjust your tire pressures accordingly. Then again, I'm the guy who drives his Spec Miata to the the track with no tools. Not even a jack.

I'm finding there's a lot of things on this car I'm having to do two or three times;, for example, sway bar mounts, bushings, oil cooling; the first iteration was for street durability, the 'sporty street', then track. People have asked me why I don't just scrap the cab tub and start over with a coupe; to someone detached from the project, it makes sense, but I have such a sense of 'ownership' with this car. Other than outsourcing the engine conversion, I have done all of the modifications myself. This car has been a test mule for many a wacky idea; some I've confessed to, some I'm embarassed to admit.

Anyway, I have a couple of time committments which will make it tricky to get this done before Sunday; I've been whoring myself out doing metal fab & welding work to pay for the various extra bits for the car. A fiberglass hardtop and fiberglass 935 doors are in transit as we speak

The need for through-body reinforcement, unfortunately....has been documented before. The trouble is...the reinforcement needs to be big, beefy, and cover as large an area as possible. Most ( not Thom, it seems) simply reinforce the bolt area with these dinky washer type devices.......won't last.

When you posted about the fiberglass hardtop, that was my thought, but I kept it to myself. Then later while out in the garage, I looked over at my neglected SC and realized how much that car ment to me, and I realized why you haven't abandoned your cab.

suck it up, get some steel sheet and fix it- that's an easy repair. go have fun. And coupe over cab?! your car has more reinforcements in the tub because it is a cab. Put on the hardtop, fix up the cage to match and go play

Thom, you can do it! You just have to not sleep between now and then! Too easy!

BTW, Masraum, I don't know whether to be impressed or horrified that you recognized exactly what the problem was from that first picture. Wow.

Approaching 6000 posts, eat, sleep and breath this stuff and I haven't owned a Porsche in months. It's a sickness kind of like being a sex addict.

I just hope one day to have soaked up as much as possible from the likes of Bill V, Wil F, TRE, JW, Warren, etc... I want to be the crotchety old guy that everyone tolerates because his knowledge is so vast. I have a looooooong way to go.

Yes, it's an easy fix, and I even have material on hand with which to fix it. It's just time. And to think I hadn't so much as looked sideways at the car for 3 weeks or so.
